Very Old Plug-ins

Post by nxlloyd »

Hello Motu Nation--

I am currently working on a project in which I am opening DP files I created in spring 2000. I am very pleased that these files still open!! However, I've discovered a few plug-ins (non Motu ones, I think) do not load up properly, and am wondering if anyone has encountered these. There are five that don't load and they are:

vWsK:MASD
vWsK:M2QR
vWsK:S2QR
vWsK:SCRU
4791:

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

It would help if you included info like versions being used. If you are using DP 8 you would probably not expect old plugins to work because they are likely to be 32 bit versions. DP will only work with 64 bit plugins.

What?! I think DP still works in 32-bit mode. I mean, I'm still using it in 32-bit mode.

Don't know what those plugs are though.

Don't know what those plugs are, but if they ran on a G4 they probably are PowerPC only, and unless you run Snow Leopard 10.6.8, you are probably out of luck.

On a personal note, I haven't run DP in 32 bit for a long time now. To the o/p, if you do end up running in 64, you can use a bridge (like jbridge, 32 lives, Plogue Bidule). This might even save your old plugs, but you'll have to place them in new slots and redo the settings.

Blowhole G4! LOL. Add the G5 in that category as well.

Correct. I supposed that if the OP just fired up DP 8 it would be in 64 bit mode and he wouldn't see the plugins. But I didn't know what she/he was doing.

Yes, DP 7.24 still works in Mavericks. I use it to open old projects that aren't (or never will be) 64bit ready.

Some ancient 32bit plugs stopped working in OS 10.4 (rare), others in 10.5 (more common), still others in 10.6, 10.7 (a lot) and 10.8.2 (don't work and will crash your Mac till you remove every trace).

With some, only the GUI stopped working but the engine still works. Fish Fillets, comes to mind–some of their GUIs stopped working in OS 10.5. This means that the effect may still run but you cannot tweak anything. I have a couple of old tracks that I used SpitFish on that I have to fix with a different de-esser someday but I can still hear it working.

A heads-up: MDA freeware AUs still work in DP 7 and DP 8 32bit. The AUs don't work at all in 64bit. The 64bit VSTs will work in DP 8 but their Carbon based GUIs won't open so none of the controls are available.

I have no idea what effects you are running from the names you posted.

Thanks for the replies all - the 32-bit/64-bit issue had not even occurred to me. 7.24 works beautifully on Mavericks, and as I said there are only a few plug-ins that aren't showing up.....I have no recollection of what they even are, though I can guess from context.

Yes, I was even able to get my Blowhole G4 to startup in MacOS 9.2.2 and I opened DP 3.11!!!! Alas, it still didn't know what the plugs were. But running 9.2.2 was amazing! And the feel of the program was quite snappy, I must say.

I changed to using Pro Tools more than 10 years ago as my main DAW, but I am really enjoying my time back in DP, and remembering how beautifully it runs.

You aren't the only one who keeps a G4 around for the old stuff. Mine is OS 9.2.2 / 10.4.11.

Great site! I didn't know about it. For years I used to go back to some old Mac system to bring certain files out and up to OS X. I often did this for clients who wanted old projects we'd worked on in, say, System 3.2. Sometimes it took days to find all the bits and pieces of software and hardware to make it work. This site, if it will hang around for a while, could be very valuable in that regard. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to download all the mac systems you think you might ever need, just in case this site is no longer around when you need them. Also, it's worth writing to the site admins and thanking them for archiving this stuff.

By the way, the systems aren't in any particular order that I can tell. If you're looking for System 1, or any of the early systems, you just have to keep looking.

Here's a link to the early systems; Macintosh System 1 - System 7.x.
