Nice video of DP used in composing

Post by nk_e »

Hey folks -

Mike Patti over at Cinesamples posted a youtube video recently: Cinesymphony Lite Composition Screencast.
Michael Patti with a real-time composition screencast featuring the newest installment in our collection: CineSymphony LITE!
I really like these and learn from them...and he's just so damn good at what he does. CineSymphony Lite sounds great too.

Anyway, the whole thing is done with DP8. Enjoy!

I think Mike is going to do very well in this business. He's very good at composing, which is the core of his success. Everything else fits around that like puzzle pieces, and he's trying a lot of things. I wish him the best!

Cool stuff. I couldn't figure out what he's using for the faders in that shot?

I'm using the PC1600X - an old discontinued MIDI controller. Its still the best in my opinion.

I feel silly for asking this. Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper MIDI fader unit that would work well for entering this type of MIDI data? Also, since I've never done it before, is assigning function to those faders fairly simple in DP? Thanks for your help!

I just like the feel of the faders. They have a nice resistance to them, and the have these nice quality rubber faders. I dunno, just feels super pro and solid compared to many of the other options out there which feel plastic-y and cheap.

Its a shame that Peavey discontinued it. There's certainly a market from some ingenious entrepreneur to develop a new one! ;)

Those samples sound good! Seems like they are much more playable and better than the vienna stuff that comes bundled with Kontakt. It was good to see another persons workflow.

Looks like that CineSymphony Lite will be released on 10/14/14. I wonder what it'll include and how much it'll run. Seems like a pretty promising library for someone like me with limited funds, but high-dollar expectations.

While I have to agree with you about Cinesamples sounding great, I also have to wonder why Kontakt, MachFive and other samplers often want to bundle Vienna samples. I started with Vienna samples that way, but thought they were awkward and unmusical, because I could not control them in a musical way.

After many years of using Vienna's own interfaces, especially the advanced interface, I find VSL's samples to be amazing. I can find a way of getting them to do about anything I want. Of course... I pay a lot for that privilege. I still think that lower-priced samples are better workhorses for composing and quick mock-ups, especially when you can get so much out of the better ones. But to try to make a musical mockup using Vienna in Kontakt? I question the concept of that. Maybe it's better now than it was when I quit using Kontakt a few years back.

I'm relieved to 'hear' you say that. I had assumed I was just too lazy to get my head around the articulation switching. I've not had those problems with other libraries. I don't think recent releases of Kontakt have changed anything about the vienna stuff.

Now that I think of it, it makes PERFECT sense for Kontakt to license Vienna samples that way. It's one way of saying "see? You don't want to use VSL. Stay here in Kontakt Lagoon, where the water's warm and the bottom is sandy."

At one time Vienna was the best. It may not be now, but also keep in mind that it was designed in a different way, more to be like the raw instruments with all the articulations and ability to compose anything, with nuance, etc.. Back in the day, East West always had a bit more of that big hollywood blockbuster in your face sound, but vienna was more subtle. Now there are numerous libraries out there, including this one, which are impressive to say the least, but they do take things from a different approach, which is to go for those big, gritty, dramatic sounds. Nothing wrong with that, its just a different approach. Vienna still has a place.

Oh, it's great with its own interface. It's just hard to control in a 3rd party interface like Kontakt. With its own interface it's pretty easy to control how it moves through its velocity layers for expression; that's very hard to do in Kontakt (as far as I could tell). I could make other libraries, like Garritan or Miroslav, respond musically to simple Breath Control or Expression Control, but Vienna just wouldn't seem to move right. Put it in its own interface, adjust the parameters, and suddenly you have something that feels like real fiddles and flutes. Well... to a point. I actually still prefer Wallander Instruments for woodwinds and brass, even though it's about 9 years old now (and quite a few years since an actual update). I just hope he keeps it current, working with new releases of OS X.

My favorite sample libraries are: Vienna for strings, Wallander for all winds except flute, Miroslav for flute, and Miroslav for quick mockups with no time for elaborate setup. I'm not being fair to Michael Patti here in his own thread, but I think it's clear from the video that his CineSymphony Lite is perfect for cinematic composition and mockups. I haven't tried it, but I'm sure I'd use it in as often as Miroslav if I had it. That sounds wrong; Miroslav had gotten a bad rep for a while, because it was old and often used in hardware samplers that didn't offer much control. But the Miroslav Philharmonik had brought it back to life. I'm sure CineSymphony Lite can do far better than that.
