Metering. Any Suggestions?

Post by Bennie Sims »

I am learning somethings about loudness and measurement and found that I need an accurate way of metering in the mastering lab or DP 8. Any suggestions??

There are dozen of plug-ins for metering. Most mastering plugins have metering. I suggest you look into something that follows Bob Katz's K-series spec, Dolby LKFS, and/or Dorrough loudness.

DP metering bridge works just fine. At least no TV stations or post houses have complained in the last several years.

UNless the latest version of DP meter bridge has changed, it is peak reading only. I'd get something that gives some other options like RMS, VU, PPM, etc.

As others have said, there are a bunch of really good metering plugins out there. One I just recently found is Spectre, available through the Apple App Store for a sale price of $50. It's an amazing set of meters including actual Loudness (LU) meters. Unfortunately, at the moment, it isn't a plugin, but it's really easy to route your signal from your DAW to Spectre with AUNetSend. According to their website, there is an AU version of Spectre in the works that will run as a plugin.

There's also this:

That's the bundle, but you can get individual meters separately.

+1 for the Blue Cat plugs! I've got the bundle and really like them. There are 20 different meters in Spectre that go well beyond the stuff in Blue Cat. If you are having to deal with some of the new broadcast loudness requirements, the loudness meters are really handy. Of course, as I mentioned in my earlier post, you have to deal with the fact that they currently don't run as a plugin. Hopefully, the AU versions will be out soon!

For free you can't beat Span.

I use this for a few different things but find it really handy on the master fader to set my final output to -6 before mastering.

Blue Cat Audio.

I was going to post about them, but I see that others already have, so I'll throw my support in with them.

I've been using Melda's Loudness Analyzer lately. I really like it. Melda's got some good plugs in general.
