Quick automation question...

Post by Kellog »

What key do I hold while dragging highlighted automation points forward or backward in time to keep them from shifting up or down while I drag? I want them at the same level but earlier or later in time. Doing a live dvd mix and using lots of panning and volume changes on different vocalists for each song. Thanks in advance, Kelly

Not at the studio Mac right this second, but when highlighted in the SE right or left arrow keys as I recall. If you have the grid locked to a note value they move in those increments...unlocked results in tiny steps.

There might also be a shift key command combo to prevent up or down movement as you drag or slide.

After more investigation (RTFM!) I found Range Latch automation recording. Does just what I needed. View the tracks you wanna automate in SE, select the song range (in my case drag between 2 markers), arm Range Latch, play the track and move the volumes or pans where you want em and they go there for the entirety of the tune. Yay RTFM.

When using the graphic editor to move automation points, the SHIFT key will constrain movement to the first direction you budge it. So, if you're moving it up or down (changing the value), it will prevent moving it in time, or if you're moving it in time, it will preserve the value.

SHIFT generally works that way throughout Mac graphic apps.

Shooshie thanks. I'll check that as well. I never use the graphic editor. Time to expand again further into DPs deep pool.
