Sharing entire DP folders

Post by 31flies »

What is the best way of sharing an entire DP folder...mix, audio files, etc...with a fellow DP user via the internet? Dropbox seems to want to make each audio track its own separate upload, as opposed to just taking the folder that contains everything. I understand the separate audio is necessary when using over different platforms, but I thought I could just snag a 500mb all-inclusive DP folder and send it to a fellow user to mix for me.

No?

Any help is appreciated,

John

Zip the folder before uploading to DropBox?

That's the correct way. Click or right-click onnthe folder and select Archive from the dropdown menu.

If the folder size is small enough, you can email it - this zips the file as it attaches.

Zipping the folder preserves all header information and, when unzipped on the new machine, ensures that the correct privileges will be assigned by the new system.

This applies if you sneakernet the file or push it across your network, also.

Time Machine and Migration Assistant, like email do not have this issue.

It's not just DP folders. I have the same issues with Word docs. I can't just drop them into my wife's computer across the network without zipping first or emailing.

you should always zip stuff, even if it's just one bwav. Protects the files. Sometimes they become corrupt if you just send them by themselves. weird.

Someone around here recently put up a link to Gobbler which is a session backup/sharing service. Looks like it has a lot of potential and has a free low storage membership. I've signed up but haven't used it yet - may be worth a look: http://www.gobbler.com
