Advice of libraries for a full-length movie
Hi guys,
which virtual libraries do I need to have in my arsenal for a full-length movie track? Machfive? MX4? Komplete 9 Ultimate?
I already have some nice VSL instruments for orchestral sounds and I pretend to buy the great piano they have. Besides that I think they will want those kind of long sounds like pads and industrial noises etc. Any advices?
Thank you,
Rubens.

Any particular genre of film? Is definitely get Plugsound Pro and Xtreme Fx. Then again Extreme FX comes with MachFive. IRCAM in M5 can also create some amazing pads.
Re: Advice of libraries for a full-length movie
It is a brazilian "experimental" art film, and they doesn't want rich orchestral sounds, they will be more into Lithophones, glass instruments, undefined not usual sounds. I think I will need some industrial sounds too... All kind of long sounds that transform itself with some wheel control... The thing is that I only have intimacy with orchestral colors, so I am a little lost on that.

You might want to add Izotope Iris to the toy box. You can get it and 8 additional libraries right now for $249 or $149 with the basic 4G of samples. It's a lot of fun and might provide something quite useful.

Re: Advice of libraries for a full-length movie
Look around for some ethnic collections. Some may use the word "world." I have one by Garritan, I think, and some smattering of others which I can't remember. I say this not because your project is Brazilian, but because these collections invariably have all kinds of little noisemakers and primitive instruments that you will find handy for the kind of thing you mentioned. Bells, whistles, blocks, bottles, odd strings, reeds, and flutes... you'll find them in ethnic collections.
The main thing is that they should be recorded nicely without background or baseline noise. Don't reject a collection because the timbres aren't familiar. You can change them with EQ, compression and room enhancements as needed. I find that just browsing these collections sends my imagination spiraling with ideas for ways to use them.
BTW, my daughter studied guitar, rhythm, singing and songwriting in Brazil, and I absolutely love the music she's been making with those influences. Before that, I was a fan of Brazilian music, both pop and classical, and I always incorporated it into my concerts. There's a world of creativity down there!

Thank you all for the tips!
Mike, Izotope Iris looks very interesting... But I could have the same possibiities with Machfive no? Of course machfive is more expensive... That's your point?
Shoosh, are you familiar with the Exotic Percussion of VSL? Nice to know that you like brazilian music, which for me means the music they were making in the 70's to 80's...

Have a look at the competitive crossgrade list for Mach Five. Maybe you have one of the eligible products. I used Logic 8 because it came with EXS24, which qualified for the lower price on Mach Five.Rubens wrote:Of course machfive is more expensive.

For me it goes back to Villa-Lobos, and continues through the present day, pretty much. But I love Jobim and friends.

Mach Five is nothing like Iris. In fact there really is no other VI like Iris that I can think of.Rubens wrote:Thank you all for the tips!

There is a free downloadable demo of Iris available - try it for yourself.

You might also want to check out U-he Zebra 2. It is great for that kind of stuff.

Can't beat Omnisphere either. I still use it all the time.

Re: Advice of libraries for a full-length movie
MachFive let's you do incredible things with samples. It can also do things to recorded tracks that are not possible in DP.
I have a thread in the MachFive section of MOTUnation on competitive upgrades and how they work. ESX24 is often the least expensive way to qualify unless you own another product already.
Iris can really f&*# up a sample in ways you never dreamed. When you mentioned long sweeps and drones, I thought of Iris. It's limited in its scope but there is so much you can do withi those limitations.
I mentioned this thread to my wife the other day. Her advice: "if the movie has spies, you need bongo drums. I think it's the law that all spy films must have bongos in the sound track."
