MIDI out from VST instruments works just fine!

Post by Michael Canavan »

Like the title says. Most people coming from Windows are going to just assume this is the case because VST instruments have been able to do this for years, but we Mac OSX AU users are given another thing besides compatibility with the Windows version to think about VST for. :) Basically Drum machines and synth VSTi with built in step sequencers that support it can send MIDI notes to other tracks. In my case I have FXPansion Geist sending a snare track to the second MIDI channel in MachFive 3 with Star Drums on it. Tested it also with NI Reaktor with Spiral a generative sequencer sending to a synth in another track.

MIDI out capable VSTi show up in DP8 as MIDI input options when you instantiate the plug in. The caveat is not all Reaktor sequencers can send MIDI out, and Geist has fixed MIDI notes on it's drum pads, but that's easily solved by the MIDI Transpose plug in!

This is currently a VST only thing, as Logic doesn't support Au MIDI out, although Urs Heckman (Diva, Zebra 2, ACE plug ins etc.) stated that AU spec does support it. So Logic is holding up plug in developers from using the AU spec to it's fullest. :mumble:
M2 Studio Ultra, RME Babyface FS, Slate Raven Mti2, NI SL88 MKII, Linnstrument, MPC Live II, Launchpad MK3. Hundreds of plug ins.

FYI FM8 does not send MIDI out from it's wonderful arpeggaiator, even though it shows up as a MIDI input.

Hi Michael,
The dev(s) is correct, AU does support MIDI out.
http://www.meldaproduction.com implemented MIDI Out in the AU version of MDrummer plugin a few years back, but it's still a no go in DPs. The DP needs to have specific instructions coded within, to respond to AU' sending MIDI OUT and apparently this can be coded in less than an hour, according to Melda. I passed the info/request to MOTU and received a zero interest for the implementation.

There are a couple of threads about this on Motunation, also.

That's the gist of it. Logic being the main DAW on OSX more or less has cemented the lack of MIDI out in AU, and to a degree if what you say is true, (and I have no reason not to believe you), then MOTU could and should have picked up the ball on this. Though the reality is now that DP does VST in OSX developers and MOTU to a degree can wait until Logic support AU out.... blah! Maybe a new version of AU with Logic able to support MIDI out will break this stalemate? In the Meantime, the plug ins on my system that can do MIDI out are VST...
