SSD for Boot Drive...?

Post by cbergm7210 »

I just got an SSD for my VI's and seems to be working well, and I know there has been plenty of discussion about the boot drive, but I'd like to hear one more time from folks who switched to SSD for their boot drive. Does it really improve DP's snappiness quite a bit?

I ask because more often than not I'll get a project that for one reason or another starts really bogging down...either I have lots of takes on lots of tracks, or whatever. I'm clicking around the screen and DP is 3 or 4 clicks behind. Just wanted opinions on if an SSD on the boot drive would help this behavior.

Thanks for the redundant info, guys.

from my experiences the SSD Boot Drive, for me, didn't really make DP run any better or "snappier". It loaded faster, and loaded projects maybe a bit faster. Also you can run other apps in the background better, faster.

But I believe if you want a faster session, especially if it's more audio driven, is to have the SSD drive be your "Projects" Drive. Most people have separate drives like System, Projects, Video, Samples. So I think having an SSD 'Projects' drive will help with the boggy-ness.. (in theory)

Now, if you run your projects off of your system (boot) drive, then I bet it'll be faster!

But I can't confirm that.. SSD's are expensive and I only have 1, being my Boot Drive. I still have a 7200 Disk drive as my Project drive.. one day i'll be all SSD... ONE DAY!

I agree with everything Marc says. I switched to an SSD for the boot drive a couple of years ago and everything opens faster (a lot faster) but running the program feels no different.

I suppose Marc's theory about the project drive could be tested simply by copying a project over to the SSD and running it from there.......if I can be bothered I'll report back..

It's worth it for the boot drive though, just to have it up and running in 20 secs.

+1 to both of the above. I also thought that it might make DP run more efficiently, but I can't see any difference. however, I *DO* love the 15 sec. boot-up on my Mac!!

Ditto again also. I'm using Samsung SSDs for boot, samples/VIs and projects drive. Smoking hot load times, supreme snappiness. I added these drives, a better video card, DP 8 and OS 10.9 all with in a few months and the cumulative effect was like getting a new computer that runs twice as fast.

get a SSD for your boot drive it is worth it, I don't know if DP is any faster but loading things are, I have my samples on mine as well.

I run a SSD for boot, one for projects, and several for VIs. Since I added them all at once when I built my current MP, the only thing I can say is OMG to the whole kit n' caboodle. :D :D :D

I don't spend much time waiting for my Mac anymore.

Bought me one of these:

to be used as my boot drive, my Windows partition, and my VI's.

Oh yea. Installing it right now. 8)

I'd love one but just can't see shelling out $1100 for less that a 1TB drive. It reminds of when I spent $400 for 4MB if RAM for an early laser printer. I'll wait but it must be nice to have it now.

Man I love it. 8)

Can you say...
snap...
...pi...
...er!!!!!!

I had enough room where I can have a working folder for current projects, so I am now completely working 100% SSD. Sometimes life really does just get better.

Mike, I know it's a chunk of change for sure, but sitting here all day every day sometimes feels like walking a bit in mud waiting for the Mac. Now I'm running almost as fast as I want!

For sure. Just remember the PCIe setup OWC has is even faster than SATA drives. Just sayin'...and hence the price.

Thanks for the link and info. I wonder of the PCIe would allow me to access that as a 5th drive on my MP? That might make it a bit more interesting as I could free up the current boot drive.

I'll check...

That's what I did, Mike. 8) And that's why I bought the big one so it could service my VI's, boot drive and current projects.
