upgrading from 7.24 to 8: advice?

Post by doodles »

OK, thinking of entering the brave new world of DP 8. DP 7.24 has been rock solid for me, but thinking the time has come, as kind of wanting the 64-bit memory.

A few questions (I've read some of the other posts on this)

1) Is DP 8.05 pretty solid now?
2) I currently use Waves 8. If I install DP 8 and upgrade Waves to 9, I'm presuming there's no going back. Are these playing nicely together.
3) Is there any reason why I would need to go back to 7.24 at all? I've read about it over-writing some files when upgrading, but not sure this is a problem, so long as I don't need to go back.

Any other tips or advice for upgrading? thanks!

Waves allowed me to retain my iLok install of Waves 7 so I could continue to use my G5 as I set up my new Mac under V9. I'd inquire... V9 works perfectly with DP8, but it reportedly does not work properly under earlier versions of DP.

Moving Altiverb from MAS to AU (for 64 bit) means old projects fail to load Altiverb presets. Now you can get Altiverb MAS 64 bit but iLok 2 is required.

I'm still running ML. Waiting for a few more Mavericks upgrades to try he current Mac OS. I'm also still running DP8.04; it has been so perfect, I am loath to go to 8.05.

64 bit changed my DP life, in a very good way. Here's wishing you success with your upgrade doodles!

OK, have done a Carbon copy clone, just in case (never used it before) of main drive.

So I'm thinking of installing DP 8.06 and Mountain Lion latest version. (rather than mavericks). Sound good?

One question. If i have 32-bit VI's (some of the Arturia stuff) how would I run this in DP 8? Or is it just goodbye to these now?

Try their demo first. The Arturia plugs I have seem to work fine with it. :)

Two sets of opinions on that. A lot of the issues that people have w/ Mavericks I experienced in ML 10.8.2 such as trackpad issues, kernel panics etc. All were caused by conflicts with outdated software.

You can run DP 8 in 32bit or 64bit. 32bit only plugs will not run in DP 8 64bit unless you are using a wrapper. Tons o' threads on this.

I'm still on ML. I see no reason to change to Mavericks for my production Mac.

I'm still experiencing odd behaviors in DP8.06 and the occasional crash, freeze, etc.

7.24 was more reliable on my system-- but I haven't tried it since updating to mavericks, so I can't say whether the oddities are OS or DP related.

So I upgraded to 10.8.5 and DP 8.06. Installed latest Waves Diamond, and updated all plug-ins. (except Arturia Analog Factory, which is 32-bit). ALl seems to have gone pretty smoothly except a horrid Crash on Quit which i can't get rid of. But I see others are having the same with that...

James, this looks ideal. I'll go look into it. Thanks so much!

Thanks everyone for the help. Will get putting it through its paces in next few days. I'm expecting some teething issues with all my VI's, but we'll see. Gonna take a while to get used to the new look!

Yey!

After reading various posts, I started disabling various plug-ins. Vienna Ensemble Pro Audio Input is the culprit. As soon as that was disabled, COQ is gone. Woop Woop

I take it back. I'm in hell. Crash on Quit everywhere, even when I've disabled ALL plug-ins. Anyone got any ideas?

What do you see in Console when you attempt to Quit? Whatever is happening will show up.

Hi Mike.

what's console?

Been on phone to tech support for last 2 hours. Tried everything so far. Currently reinstalling system software...Have so far run it off internal audio card, same problem. MIDI is fine, so it's as soon as any kind of audio system is used. weird.

Sure it'll be something basic, but not so far.

Console is an Apple utility that's installed with the OS. It lets you look behind the scenes, so to speak, at what's happening in your computer. It can be found in Applications/Utilities.
