2408mk2 vs 2408mk3

Post by wonder »

I have a 2408mk2. I'm pleased with it seeing how I use the TDIF/ADAT exclusively.

I am looking into doing some upgrades and wondering if there's any difference in the quality.

i know a change will be the CueMix DSP. I do like the newer interface of the mk3 vs the older mk2 interface.

Just wondering if it's worth the upgrade.

Do you? If you have a 424 card already, no there won't. CueMix DSP is part of the 424 card, not the 2408.

I can't find specs on the mkII so I don't know what the differences are except this:

The 2408mk3 is the first audio interface to provide on-board video and SMPTE time code synchronization features. These features allow you to slave your 2408mk3 system to video, SMPTE time code or both - without a dedicated synchronizer.

Actually, unless I'm completely misinformed and blind, the CueMix GUI for the mk3 is completely different than the mk2 GUI I'm using now. So, yes there will.

From the MOTU site:

Because the mixing takes place on the PCI-424 card, any MOTU Audiowire interface, including the original 2408, can take advantage of Cuemix's flexible monitoring.

Maybe you can update the version of cuemix you are using.

Sorry, I have no idea if the Mk3 sound quality is any better than with the Mk2. I've wondered that myself, and my search did not find any consistent claims of any improvement. FWIW, the sound on my 828-3 seems brighter but grittier than the sound on my 2408-2, so newer is not necessarily better when with MOTU converters.

I have an 828mk3 but it's not totally working completely flawless.
I'll check for updated CueMix

I made a mistake. I have the 828mkII and the 2408mk3. I downloaded the latest drivers and now CueMix GUI is updated to the latest version.

Thanks for the replies.

Important not to get CueMix DSP and CueMix FX mixed up. The two used to have different UIs but the latest versions bring them together. Only the FW based mk3 interfaces have the effects such as reverb, compression and EQ though, the PCI424 doesn't.

True.

The app I have is CueMix FX although it has no effects nor dynamics.
Essentially it's CueMix dsp but it's named CueMix FX in my apps folder.
Odd.

I have both. The 2408 MK3 analog I/O sounds way better than the 2408 MK2.
