Izotope RX 3 in DP

Post by mikehalloran »

I admit I was on the fence about whether or not I was going to upgrade from RX 2. RX 2 works well and the only feature that I was eyeballing in 3 is the 'de-reverb' which only comes with the Advanced version and I don't really need it and...

One thing about RX 2 that I don't care for - but am used to - is that it likes to be first in the chain as a plug in. You fix the audio, get it right then move on. While the GUI is open, however, your DP windows are unresponsive and if other plugin windows are open, forget about it. You wait forever just to close them so you can go back to work.

This evening, I am working on a project I've not touched in many years. As an assignment for an article, I made an album on a 4-tr cassette deck in 1991 and released it as a cassette only album. After recent success restoring a home-grown album for a friend, I decided to see if I could do something with this old thing. Like before, I am counting on RX 2 to work miracles for me and, for the most part, I am not disappointed.

Till I get to one track. RX 2 had 'learned' the noise and hum for the rest of the project but there was a track with my then 6 year old daughter (the one who towers over me in my picture) with me on guitar. It was quite noisy in a way that the others weren't and I had trimmed the track so
tightly that there was no way for RX 2 to 'learn' the noise.

So I downloaded RX 3. Leaving RX 2 in place plus the other plugs open, I opened the Denoiser tool, selected Output Noise Only in Advanced Mode, clicked on Manual, played with a few sliders and buttons until I heard the noise only. I unchecked Output Noise Only and heard a beautiful track that I always felt was beyond saving. I also noticed that DP 8 windows had a slight lag but didn't freeze like with RX 2. Just for kicks, I tried to get the same results with RX 2 but it was not as good - and, of course I had to shut everything else in the project down.

And then I got out my credit card... dang - they got me again!

I'm not convinced I need the Advanced version so I just upgraded the basic. If you have old recordings to bring into the 21st C. I don't know... I consider it one of my basic must have tools.

Through 9/27/2013, the intro price is $249 or $749 for the Advanced version. If you have RX or RX 2, you should see your upgrade price in your user account.

Many of Izotope's recent updates do not work properly in DP 7.24.

I just opened RX 3 in DP 7.24 and it is fine.

The current versions of the products on this page work in DP 8 only. I discovered this when I downloaded Ozone 5.04 - wha...???? Fortunately, uninstalling and re-installing 5.03 fixed me up again.

Blank plug-in screen when loading within 32-bit AU Carbon plugin hosts takes you to download links showing you the last versions that work in 7.24.

This is giving me incentive to finish up my last 7.24 projects.

Anyone try the de-reverb yet? I'd really like to know if Advanced will be worth the much higher price.

I have the demo of Advance still enabled but nothing that needs fixing with the de-reverb tool.

Izotope RX 4 has been announced for September delivery.
https://www.izotope.com/en/products/audio-repair/rx4/

Can't figure out too many details on the new tools so I have no idea if I will want to buy it. RX 3 Advanced does everything I want.

I see that if you buy 3 now you get 4 when it ships. Having updated to RX 3 Advanced in May, I'm curious how far back the free update will go. I certainly don't wish to pay another $399 this year.

I'm still using RX2 and love it, so this is great info to have about the advantages of upgrading. I've had a need for De-Reverbing some dialogue tracks in the past, so I can see that being a valuable tool in RX3/4, but I also REALLY want the artifact-free tempo change abilities that I believe only come with the Advanced versions, so the steeper upgrade price of that has kept me from jumping. I'm dreaming that RX4 might include tempo change in the standard version.......

I did, too.

RX 3 was a major upgrade in that it was much, much easier on system resources when used as a plug-in (still the way I prefer to use it).

I can leave the GUI open and see what DP and other plugs are doing - something that I could never do in RX2 where I had to close the GUI after I was done so that the rest of my system worked properly.

Not all the tools work as a plug, of course, but Denoiser, Declicker and Hum Removal are the ones I use the most.

Nope - RX 4 hasn't shipped yet. In fact, if you buy 3 from Izotope right now, you'll get 4 for no extra charge.

"RX 3 and RX 3 Advanced are on sale through September 4. Buy now and get a free upgrade to RX 4!"

I believe that holds true if you buy from Sweetwater, too.
