DP 8 Plug in presets - not there yet?
Just kind of wondering if/when we might see some presets for these plugins? I so want to understand plugs like the dynamic EQ and the videos help, but there's nothing like a good, well built preset to exemplify stuff like that.
Just a thought...

MOTU should show off all their plugs with awesome presets. As many as it takes to demonstrate de plug-ins.
Presets are very useful to understand and explore the plugs in depth. Besides, how hard can it be to do them?
They'd kill a 2 birds with one shot.

+ 1 _ While I understand the principle of this plug-in after reading the manual, I can't use it well .MIDI Life Crisis wrote: I so want to understand plugs like the dynamic EQ and the videos help, but there's nothing like a good, well built preset to exemplify stuff like that.

Re: DP 8 Plug in presets - not there yet?
I agree 100%, and furthermore, I'm just amazed because if I worked at MOTU as an audio engineer, it would probably be the most fun part of my job! Playing around with different settings to work for different material, sounds like a dream job. Presets have often been known to make or break audio hardware/software. What I'd REALLY like, more than anything are some MWLeveler presets. Magic Dave has described quite a few standard settings for MWLeveler that he likes to use in different instances, but I can never remember what they are! This seems like a particular plugin that would be similar for material across the board, and would have very useful, almost "set it and forget it" type presets.
For me, I feel pretty confident with dynamic EQs, being mostly a C6 user, though. I tend to see it as one of those things that's going to be so different in any circumstance that presets wouldn't really do a whole lot. I mainly use it as a "spot correction" tool (for lack of a better term). Say I have a violin that starts really piercing up in the higher register, but I still want to preserve the higher harmonics when it's playing down lower. This is a perfect job for a dynamic EQ, you can set it to pull down the highs when they're getting too much, but let the normal material come through. Using a standard compressor might not work because those piercing highs might not be technically any more amplitude than some perfectly-okay material in the lower register. And a standard EQ wouldn't be ideal because then you might end up destroying the harmonics in the lower register. Unfortunately, for that kind of work, every recording is going to be different, so I'm not sure presets could do it justice.
Another thing is bass control. You've got a nice bass guitar track, but the low end is too sustained and boomy. You want a nice attack, but the highs can stay where they are. So you can set up a compression band down where it starts to really have a lot of build-up, and give it an amount of attack time to let the transients come through, and get out of the way. I've been using the C6 (very similar to Dynamic EQ) a lot recently for things like this. I usually only use one or two bands at a time though... full range dynamic EQing is good for mastering, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with it on a single track.

I thought about it: if the work of the plug-in depends largely on the signal file to work, the presets lapse.Prime Mover wrote:Unfortunately, for that kind of work, every recording is going to be different, so I'm not sure presets could do it justice.

Electronics Musician had an article on increasing the stereo field in your mixes. A big part of the article was given to DP's Dynamic Equalizer. I almost always start with a preset and then adjust it to my liking. And I agree with you guy %100, seeing what a preset does and how it is set teaches you a lot about how the plugin works.

Dynamic EQ or Spacial Maximizer? (the two are almost completely identical in appearance) I don't see exactly how D-EQ would make for a stereo adjuster, but SM is PERFECT for it. The interesting thing about SM is that you can't destroy the relative widths that are already their, just emphasize them. So you can't make a mono track stereo or vice-versa, which may be what you're after, however if you already have a bit of stereo width, you can make it bigger! I almost used it last night for narrowing a stereo mix that I accidentally made too wide, but then I just went back in to the mix and re-output it. SM would have worked wondrously had I been a mastering engineer not able to request a remix though.
