Throw in the Ultralite and you've got a seriously weird lineup. Ultralite is like the Traveller's evil twin: more analog ins, but less pres and no ADAT. When you really think about it, having ADAT isn't really that big of a feature, since you can always hook up multiple devices via FW. So the Ultralite and Traveller become damned close in their feature set (I've never used a Traveller, but the Ultralite felt VERY similar to an 828, just no ADAT and two-less analog ins).

As for 96kHz and 192kHz, I really couldn't care less. "Stuck" at 96kHz seems kind of absurd notion to me. I would never want to go above 96: my CPU would hate me, as would my hard drive. I'm very happy at 48kHz, and have no intention on going anywhere. I even had a session musician friend look at me funny, and said that many of the engineers in the Bay area that he had worked with were still using 44.1. I'd believe it too, and I really wouldn't blame them. But I do like working in 48kHz (I'm also more used to it, since I work with video for my day job). I can kinda see the appeal of 96, but it's not worth it to me. And 192 is just overkill.

I don't think so. Tried that with my 828mkII this morning - nope!

BBC where else?

Actually I recall shipping out on the '59 Imperial oil tanker. During an emergency downshift you'd change AM stations and then crash.

This little Motu 16 has a scope. If the brick wall filters allow for an increased frequency response, as I'd imagine, then one could actually use it for forensics. View the digital waterfall on say different cell phones, or older generation converters. Nice that it has MIDI. +1

Learned from what Apogee didn't do at first, and then covered all base's. 8)

It'll show up - probably when DP 8 is ready. I'm gonna guess The Ides of June.

Get two, Bruté! :)

Get two.

My SW rep said he'd have more info later this week.

I get a feeling Track 16 is gonna sell like hot cakes:
"They're so light and fluffy white
We'll raise a fortune by tonight
They're so light and fluffy brown
They're the finest in the town"

Well, for me this clearly is competition to the RME Babyface.

It is somehow funny they only included FW400 interface (although using a FW800 connector), not a FW800 interface.

Seems quite interesting to me. on the FW-bus with a UAD2 Sat .... Or leave the FW-Bus to the UAD2 Sat and connect it via USB (how is USB performance of MOTU compared to RME - who are somehow renown for achieving excellent result via USB ?)

Six balanced outputs for surround would have be better .... though ....

best

Good point. I find that MOTU has a history of sometimes not necessarily being first, but waiting and learning from the competition, and then doing it better. I'll be really interested in the quality of these mic pres.

Right now, I'm using a setup with an HD192 and a 24 I/O. I *NEVER* run at a sampling rate over 44.1, I simply bought the HD192 on the basis of the better circuitry and converters. Also, not using many outboard synths at all. I could probably stand to lose the 24 I/O, and given the likely eventual demise of PCIe, it might be good to divest myself of it sooner rather than later.

In a week, I'll find out if the new MacPros have PCIe slots. If they do, I'll have some breathing room.

Big question mark on this device is mic pres. I almost always am overdubbing and never recording more than 2 mic inputs at once. However, I currently have a Millennia HV-3C and I'm sure the pres in this thing might be good, but not that good.

I don't understand your concern.

No MOTU devices are FW800. Since FW400 is forwards compatible and the bandwidth of FW800 isn't needed, it makes no sense to cripple the functionality and backwards compatibility.

I love the brushed black aluminium case but I'm still in love with my Duet 2! Preamps - amazing. Ease of use - amazing. It only has two buttons and you program them. And the screen just makes everything so simple.
Software's good too.
Plus the track 16 seems to be doubling up functions on the device taking away simplicity imo.. i may be wrong in due course!

Edit: Doesn't seem to be bus powered on usb 2.0... :?
