I just tried booting in 64 mode and mine is not doing it either. I thought I had done it successfully once before and it had just reverted back, but I guess it never actually worked in the first place. Unbelievable.
This is distressing. I want to find out the workaround hack immediately. I don't want this hanging over me for the next 2 months while I wait for a 64 bit DP that I can't even use.
And I only just bought my RAM finally... for an identical machine to yours.
I sure hope your machine reboots (and remains) in said mode, Zedster. I'll let you be the guinea pig.

Maybe that will work for some of you others who are having trouble.

Damn? confirms what I already knew.
While your Mac is technically able to run a 64-bit kernel, this is not currently enabled by Apple.
Well, it is time for me to think about a new machine. almost 5 years old this one is.

If what I'm reading is correct, my machine just makes the grade (early 2008 8-core Intel). And I found that I've been running a 64-bit kernel since installing Lion and didn't even know it: it defaults on boot to 64-bit mode.
Good news here.

Also, let's keep in mind the big deal about 64 bit: how much RAM you can address. 32 bit programs may well run in 64 bit but still only address 4GB of RAM.

I'm hip! That's why I've been looking forward! I was just reporting that I know my machine runs a 64-bit kernel and I'm happy to learn this.

You are correct. And I think that is important.
On our video mac, we boot into snow leopard 10.6.8 with regular 32 bit but FCPX runs at full 64 bit. Easy to see what does and what isnt running 64bits. Just look in activity monitor. It says either 64 or 32 bits for each app.

I hope with these 64bit leaps, the need for more than 1 Mac is solved for me. I don't do Orchestral or Soundtracks or really anything that requires the kind of massive rigs required for that type of creation.
VEP looks like a great bridging technology but IMO with things going 64 bit unless your actually doing massive MIDI/sample scoring projects the need for such technology will become less relevant for a modest approach setup wise.

So this allowed to run 64bit?
If so great!!
Yep. I'm in a 64 bit kernel right now. I am beginning to consider that perhaps my keyboard is not communicating well with the other Mac hardware. Holding down 6 and 4 did not work. I also recently had trouble booting from the Snow Leopard DVD, and I often have trouble ejecting my DVD trays as well. Perhaps there is some interference in the communication chain? Software seems to respond properly, however. No problem with regular keyboard commands.
Weird thing, yesterday we both did the 64bit boot. I saw my rig rebooted & was relieved!
Then I watched the Giants Game! had dinner etc..... came back to start working with my virginal 64bit rig and the keyboard was totally inoperable(Mac wired + #'s USB bought last summer!) naturally it was wtf time! lol
My magic track pad was totally functional btw....
Traced cable w/ USB extension cable for the keyboard to the back of the MacPro,no loose connections, I was muttering wtf repeatedly! I then decided to try the front USB inputs of the Mac,still no keyboard......even without the extension!
I was extremely thankful, mind you that I still had my diapers on! lol
So then I hooked the keyboards cable back to the USB ports as they were originally and now it works!!
I have no idea why, strange stuff.
I'm still scratching my head muttering wtf was that, some kind of 32bit ghost seeking revenge for my betrayal or part of my 64bit hazing, I'm really not sure but I find it a bit puzzling because it seems we both felt some kind of keyboard voodoo with the 64 bit transition.
