That was my understanding too, but this doc reveals some called a "32bit EFI Architecture" that apparently prevents 64bit booting. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/m ... specs.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I plug the suggested "ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi" into the Terminal I get <EFI32> :|

You know what drives me nutz about this? I get <EFI64> when I plug in that command in Terminal, yet in system profiler I apparently do not have the kernal extensions for 64 bit... " 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No". So it doesn't boot into 64 bit even though it could?

Anyway my RAM limit is 4GB so it's not much of an advantage to run 64 bit.

I bought my machine specifically with the knowledge it could boot in 64 bit. It is a 2008 3,1 I believe. I'm not in the studio but will verify later. Might also be the 8 cores or better were 64 bit but it is definitely 64 bit and booting that way.

dix wrote:Funny story (funny as in awful). Back when DAWs started going 64bit I did diligent research to make sure my 2008 Quad-Core Intel Xeon would boot into 64bit mode when the time came. Everything I found (and still find) indicated that I could. However, I never bothered to try it until today. After several attempts and an hour or so of more research: It looks like I can NOT boot into 64bit on my machine :(
That is awful. I'm sorry to hear that... but hopefully the hack that you mentioned is not very difficult to apply and you will not be stuck in 32 bit. Figuring out the work around will be a lot less frustrating than having to buy a whole new computer and start over again.

Well crap...

I just tried booting in 64 mode and mine is not doing it either. I thought I had done it successfully once before and it had just reverted back, but I guess it never actually worked in the first place. Unbelievable.

This is distressing. I want to find out the workaround hack immediately. I don't want this hanging over me for the next 2 months while I wait for a 64 bit DP that I can't even use. :-(

What I don't understand is why if we have identical Mac's?

The owner who I bought mine from actually was a power user(3-4 MPro's) farmed.
He actually worked mostly Win64
I put in a new Drive & installed SL
I wonder if he did some kind of 64 hack to try OSX in 64? If done previous does the firmware thing run in system level ?
hardware(firmware?) is actually beneath the drives running 64 bit?
This stuff is beyond, what I know lol

Holding down the 6 and 4 keys did not work on my computer, but I just managed to successfully boot in 64 bit after using this shareware application...

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32252/ ... e-selector" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe that will work for some of you others who are having trouble.

Wait. Did you try the Terminal thing that determines if you have a 32bit EFI?

Type: "ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi" (w/o quotations)

If it gives you “EFI64” then the hack won't help you.

If you get "EFI32" Here's the info on the hack. Ironically it comes from the Hackentosh community! http://netkas.org/?p=127#comment-33707" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'd love to find out if it works.

According to EveryMac.com, this is the only Mac Pro that has the 32 bit EFI. The model number is 1,1.

This site might help sort it out.

We don't. There were two rounds of Mac Pro releases that year. …see bayswater's links above.

FWIW, I am still using a PowerPC e-mail application called Eudora, and it is working just fine while booted in 64 bit.
