custom groups-continuous controller mode in 7.23

Is anyone using this? I was hoping that I could write some expression & modulation into multiple string parts that are already in my sequence while I audition the patch. How are you guys doing this? Could I do this with Multi-record? I want to use my mod wheel or Nano Kontrol if possible. Does anyone have an interface that can be assigned to specific controllers?
HELP!!!!! :)

I learned how (Thanks M!) In Groups select Custom mode, check Continous Data mode and check Insert Continuous data. Then enter Multi-record mode (Shift-command-control-M) and set the inputs to my Nano Kontrol which I have one fader assigned to controller 11. Real-time control of my Hllywd Stgs... YES!

I have a Behringer BCF2000 sitting on my desk. This device can generate and respond to MIDI controller data, and has moving faders. I can write MIDI controller data to multiple tracks. When I play the tracks back, the faders on the BCF chase the track.
In order for the BCF to animate on playback, it needs to receive that MIDI data coming back. If you set it up so that the data comes back to the BCF as you generate the data from the BCF, the BCF fader fights itself. So here is how I set it up:
Tracks 1-4 are assigned to instrument outputs. Overdub mode is engaged. Multi-record is engaged and the track inputs are assigned to the BCF.
I then set up a fourth "dummy" track. This track also records from the BCF input. When I do the record pass, the dummy track output is set to None. This stops feedback to the BCF. When I want the BCF faders to animate on playback, I set the dummy track output to the BCF.

The Berringer isn't practical because of the feedback loop maks the motorized faders fight. It requires too much changing routing to make this a viable solution! The problem isn't the box it's DP's way of communicating with it. I know many Logic users who write controller info on motorized consoles.

Wow, I have been wanting to know how to do this, or if it was even possible, for so long now! Thanks for posting!

James, I wish we had the little "winking guy with the thumbs-up" smiley they have over on Gearslutz and other sites, he's such a positive statement!

I posted about this in another thread:

http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... 26&t=47663" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also, I've got a pedal unit from Roland; the FC300. It's got 12 switch pedals plus 2 continuous data pedals (for expression, volume control, breath control, etc.) which can be very handy.

I don't think you need ANY automated faders in your physical controller units. That's a waste of interface. Just learn to use the faders and knobs on these devices and you can either record their output to separate tracks (with the same MIDI assignment as the tracks you want them to modify), or using overdub. I prefer separate tracks, because I don't have to deal with multiple lines of continuous controllers in the same space. I can combine them into one track when I'm sure I won't be editing them anymore.

Once the data is played into DP, you can use DP's awesome editing features to redraw all those lines of continuous data, making them fully automated in DP. NO OTHER DAW does continuous data as well as DP. When you learn all the drawing and display options it offers, and how they affect the desired output, you'll be blown away by what is possible. Other DAWs don't even get into the same ballpark with DP. If you want to learn some of these possibilities, look on page 2 of the Tips Sheet in a post about working with continuous data.

But the main thing is to have something with which to enter that data in the first place. The devices described above will take you far in that regard. I've never seen a device as well-suited for this sort of thing as the Behringer UMA25S, for such a low price. (About $150 from Amazon) The Roland foot control FC300 is more expensive, but indestructible and pretty easy to program. The Behringer UMA25S is extremely easy to program.

Good luck with it all.
