DP 8?

Post by stabsteer »

Hello,

Thinking about upgrading from DP6 to 7.2 and was thinking I should maybe hold off a bit before upgrading as they may have a new version coming out.

I upgraded to 6 just a few moths before 7 came out and it pissed me off so I thought I should be smart and ask if anyone knew of any rumblings of a new version.

Thanks so much for an info!

[pure speculation] Maybe they'll show it off at NAMM? But then it'll probably be several months until it's released. DP7.2 is so much better than 6 so even if it's just for a few months it's worth the money imo. Maybe you'd wanna hold off til NAMM and see if any news comes out then?

Dp 6 was not the best Dp, but 7 is.

Doesn't MOTU have a grace period?

IOW, if you buy 7.2x now, I think you'd be allowed to get DP 8 for no upgrade charge.

(Providing that if it's coming and if it's announced within the next 6 months or so.)

Buzzy

P.S. You probably would also want to download the latest drivers, etc. for 7.2x.

Even if DP8 was to be revealed @ Namm, I would not hold my breath for a release date anyways. It'll be here when it'll be here. In the meantime, DP7.2 is one the best release since there's a "Digital" before the "Performer". A no-brainer IMHO.

Honestly-- I don't see a DP8 coming out in TWO WEEKS!!! That's way too soon IMHO.

I can't remember which version it was, but I got caught in the "just out of grace period" situation once. I was really upset. I had just spent a bunch on an upgrade and now here comes another one. I called MOTU and asked if they could do anything for me. They were very nice and gave me a sizeable discount. I think you'll find MOTU's policies on this quite reasonable. Go for the upgrade!

When did 7 come out? Seem like it is too soon for 8.

+1

Just speculatin', but I think DP 6 had a relatively short life because problems with the initial release gave it a bit of a bad reputation (despite positive reviews, and the fact that many of the problems were eventually fixed). Since DP 7 has a great reputation, I imagine they might keep up with 7.x releases for a while, like DP 4, which had a pretty long life, if I recall correctly, even including a paid upgrade (4.6).

100% Agreed. I think the "6" in DP6 was retired early because of bad PR. And although many issues were fixed by DP 6.02 the "long knives" were already out for DP6 on all the forums. :(

If "6" was retired for PR reasons, and 7 is just 6 rebranded, then 6/7 or whatever you want to call it, has been out for along time. One way or another, shouldn't we expect a paid upgrade soon, whether its called 7.5 or 8.0?

I would wait until after Winter NAMM to see if DP8 is announced, and upgrade either way. standard software protocol is to give a free or substantially reduced price on the upgrade when a customer upgrades after the announcement of the upgrade, so waiting until NAMM gets rid of one major possible DP8 announcement date.

I'm in agreement that DP7 will probably be around longer than Winter NAMM though, just depends on where MOTU is in terms of a 64 bit version of DP. Considering the large percentage of people using huge sample libraries with DP it's certain they're working on it as we speak. :)

No. I think the clock was restarted when DP7 was released. You're combining the length of time for DP6 and DP7 which I think would be wrong. Maybe there will be some sort of paid upgrade, but I would bet the farm it ain't gonna be 8. Just my opinion.

Sorry, re-read your response. I don't know. My gut tells me there's no 7.5 coming out at NAMM. I think they have other software that's more ripe for an update than DP.

My gut says, at NAMM they bring out DP 7.5 (64 bit upgrade).
