How to make new version the default to open new projects?

Post by Kellog »

Like subject says, how do I make 7.2 the default version to open all projects, new or old (still have 7.12 on there just in case)? Did it when I updated to 7.12, but can't find it or remember now. Tried 'get info'... I can use 'open with' each time, but that feels like an extra step at startup. thanks!

kellog, I'm a bit confused, but if I get what you're saying, new projects - one's started by double-clicking your DP (7.2) icon, are *not* opening up in 7.2, but rather 7.12? hmmm...wierd...
When you want to start a new DP project, are you double-clicking the DP 7.2 icon in your Apps folder or are you clicking a DP icon in your dock? If it's the later, your dock DP icon may still be referring back to the DP 7.12 in your apps folder. If that's the case, trash that dock icon and drag in a new one from the 7.2 app in Apps.
otherwise, as I said....confused? :?

Sorry for confusion. Yes I have 7.2 icon in dock and it does work. I was mostly asking for older files so they'd automatically open in 7.2 instead of 7.12. When I upgraded to 7.12, somwhere in the process it asked me if I wanted it to be the default to open all dp projects. That's my goal. thanks for reply

There's another recent thread on this, but my "workaround" is just to open the files from within DP 7.2.

With DP 7.2 open use File>Open...

Double clicking an existing file made in 7.12 will most likely open 7.12.

Hope that helps...

thanks buzzsmith. FYI when I right click the dp file I want to open, I'm given the option to "open with" and all versions I have are there to choose from, so I can choose 7.2. As I said, it just feels like an extra step, and I'm sure 7.12 asked me somewhere if I wanted it to be my default for opening projects. Maybe I'm being silly...

The usual GET INFO thing isn't working here either. There is clearly something in the file TYPE in DP 7 files that is broken. Here's the strange part...

If I tell the FINDER to OPEN ALL similar files, it won't and the file reverts to 7.12, but if I DON'T select that option and simply dismiss the GET INFO box after selecting OPEN WITH, that file then opens with 7.2 from that point on. This only happens in DP. No other app appears to be affected.

I agree MIDI Life Crisis, something's askew in this version. Buzzy's link did show me to use the alt key after right clicking an 'older (7.12)' file. Then I can choose 'always open with', but it only affects that one file. Other 7.12 files are still defaulting to 7.12. I could right click them all one time each and fix 'em (gotta let them open tho, I believe), but now it just feels like a bug, which, therefore 'bugs' my curiosity... 7.12 became the default after that update. Haven't figured out how to make 7.2 the default.

I'm guessing it's a simple fix and not a big deal, but I've been wrong before... when was that? 1960 something... LOL!

here's a shot...if you're keeping that copy of 7.12 in your Apps folder..."just in case"..., drag it to the trash. Then all of your older DP sessions should - by default - open with the 7.2 app in your Apps folder. And they should - - as soon as you do a "Save" - - become 7.2-type files.
You can always put 7.12 back in Apps and use it if need be...just don't forget and empty your trash!

That may be the plan for now, thanks willie.

I know all of you are not using Snow Leopard, but I can't help but wonder if DP is not supporting creator codes any longer, because Apple is not supporting them either.

And a $5 workaround:

Safer than drag to Trash is to zip 7.12 using contextual menu and leave it in App folder, then delete original. You can always get it back if you really need it, but I ask why would you? 7.2 is solid.
