Just got the Apple "Magic Trackpad"

Postby rpmusic » Thu Jul 29, 2010 6:41 pm

Just picked up the Apple "Magic Trackpad." Absolutely perfect! I love this little device! If you've ever wanted to lose the mouse, this is the answer. After 22 years of automatically grabbing a mouse, it will take a little "getting used to," but not having to move a mouse around is already a treat!

Since DP 7.2 now has the "right clic" feature I can assign that clic to the lower right hand of the trackpad. That works VERY nicely!

The scrolling is like the trackpad on the laptop (2 fingers) but it also has a feature called "Inertia" which means that when you have a ton of tracks in DP, a quick swipe down and I'm at the bottom of the sequence. LOVE THAT!!!

It has some other features that work well with DP so I highly recommend it IF you've ever thought about ditching "the mouse!"

Once again, Apple comes out with a winner!

I don't have one, but it looks like if you set it up to the right of a new apple keyboard, so it appears as an extension, moving back and forth between the trackpad and the keyboard would be a lot faster than moving back and forth between the mouse and the keyboard. How good is it at selecting small objects like velocity icons, etc, and doing marquee selections?

Hey bayswater,

It's not much harder than using the mouse and I've only had it for a few hours. It's actually very easy and accurate. I'm guessing at this point that like anything it will become even more easy the more that I use it. The resolution is very good so it makes it very easy to select small objects like "record enable."

How about edge editing soundbites with it? That has kept me with a mouse.

I found that if you enable tap on the trackpad on a laptop, edge edit is easier than with a mouse. The pointer stays linked to the edit point until you tap again.

Interesting. I don't know that I'll get one, but you gave me the idea to assign a modifier key in my Logitech mouse software to make a "sticky click" for doing just this.

I guess a stickly click is what it is. Like pressing down the mouse button and holding it down. (You actually tap twice but on the second tap you keep your finger in contact for just a little longer than usual)

Hey James,

I actually tried that with a soundbite...for me, it was really not much different than that mouse. I just "clic hold" and move the edit with my finger. A bit different, but nothing that with a little bit of practice won't cure!

Been playing with it more and after just a few hours it's feeling very natural.

What's the difference between that and the Wacom Bamboo Touch or Fun (the latter of which I believe is larger)?

The Wacom tablets are pressure sensitive, I do not know about the Apple. The wacom ones are good for drawing and you use a pen, it looks like the Apple magic track pad is like a track pad on a notebook, I have 2 of the Wacom pen pads. I do not use them for much other than drawing; I use my track ball as a mouse.
I was in the Apple store today but they did not have the track pad in yet at $70 it is not too expensive.

I have an older Wacom Bamboo and couldn't live without it. It has absolute positioning so when you lift the pen and place it somewhere, you immediately go there, as opposed to relative positioning like a mouse or this new trackpad. I have never used mice. I went from the trackball to the Wacom. The pen is all I use for everything. A 4X6 mapped to a 23" Cinema Display. Took a bit of time to get used to is but it has saved my hands and arms (pianist). The trackpad does look cool though, but navigating with a large display may be a PITA, unless if this inertia setting works well.

The "inertia" works like a charm...one quick swipe and I'm at the bottom of a very large track list. And yes, it's operates just like a big track pad from the laptop.

I have an Intuos 2 (older model) but the Bamboo Touch and Bamboo Fun are essentially trackpads. The Touch only does finger entry, the Fun does finger and pen. I'll probably have one by the end of the day... :)
