Ultralite mk3 doesn’t work since a macOS update catalina

"MOTU Ultralite mk3 doesn’t work since a macOS update to catalina?"

Hello MotuNation team!
Wow I feel like I'm not the only one in the galley! I explain to you :
I’ve been on Sierra for a long time. I go through Boot Camp to create sound via FL Studio and I use Ableton live on mc to perform in the evening. Tou worked perfectly, the motu was recognized both on macOS and on winSeven

I did an update of my mac with the Catalina bone,

Since that day, Impossible like many people to make my sound card work properly, I tried to boot the firmware, to reinstall the drivers etc nothing helps.
I notice that motu on the forums has serious problems since Hight Sierra, ok I decide to format my mac in order to go back to "el Capitan", in short to revert to the old configuration because of projects to finalize soon. The problem is that even by reinstalling the previous configuration, the motu does not output any sound on my mac, browsing for my windows session, still no problem.
I tried several versions of the motu drivers, tried to boot the firmware ..
I don't know what to do anymore, I would have liked to contact MOTU directly but I lost the email I used to register the card.
I therefore think soon to turn to another brand if I do not have a solution, it is a shame because this card was very robust but here it is disappointing.
Have you experienced this same problem? Found solutions?
I no longer know what to disappoint and my "nervousness grows with each test but you never know, there may still be an unexploited solution ..

Have a look here https://motu.com/en-us/news/motu-and-macos-catalina/. There are new drivers available for Catalina, with specifics for which hardware units are compatible. The Ultralite Hybrid mk3 appears to be, although not the original Firewire version.

My guess is that you may be confined to using the mk3 with an earlier OS as you have tried. Not sure why that is not working for you - I have mine running on High Sierra in emulation under Parallels.

As for your account, I had the same issue. Drop customer support a note with your old email address, name and the unit, and they should be get you connected up to your account again.

Hello and thank you for your answers!

The concern being that my macbook pro dates from 2011 and cannot go further than far as hight sierra
What really amazes me is that even after having formatted my mac and reinstalled El capitan + the motu drivers, I had no sound anymore, as if the card during the update for catalina had changed something chosen , I know it sounds absurd.

Do you think Ateichman, would be interesting to try the manipulation done for catalina on my hight sierra and hope to find the hand on my motu?
I am lost, I am playing an evening in three weeks there is still time but I know how it is…

"No sound" is hard to diagnose over the internet…

Not sure why having hooked it up to Catalina should cause any problems. I also tried my Ultralite mk3 on Catalina and could not get it to work, but then I did not try any driver swapping. However, connecting it to Catalina didn't stop it from subsequently working on a different (also 2011) machine under High Sierra. I recently used it that way for a few weeks on a project.

I'd suggest first checking to see if the device is recognised as connected.

Go to "About this Mac>System report" and see if that device shows up in the Firewire pane when connected and powered up. I think it should at least show up there, even if there are driver issues. That part even worked ok for me under Catalina. Note that it won't show up as "MOTU Ultralite", but rather as "Vendor 0x1F2 Device 0x100800" or similar. If it's not showing up there, I'd suspect the connection or perhaps the device is faulty somehow.

If that's ok, open Audio MIDI Setup and see if the mk3 shows up as an audio device and a MIDI device. That's where the relevant drivers come into play, I think. It should show up by name. If it's not there, it's probably a driver issue. Make sure you have installed the correct driver for your system. MOTU tech support may be able to assist you in clearing out any old drivers, since I don't think there is an obvious "uninstall" option.

If it's ok in both those areas, perhaps try resetting the device itself to factory defaults, in case something is messed up on that level.

Hope this helps and good luck.

We've all been there! The digital equivalent of "Umm, is it plugged in?"

Glad it's now working for you.

I had a similar situation which wasn't exactly the same as the titled described, but I did stumble upon this topic, so just posting it for those who find it helpful: I had used Time Machine to copy over an existing Mac Catalina installation to a new Mac (2020 10th generation Intel, so same CPU architecture as before) after which the UltraLite failed to show up (connecting USB-C via Thunderbolt 2 adapter to a dock that has USB and FireWire ports, which is connected to the UltraLite).

It took me a while to discover that the MOTU driver is disabled by default in the security center (which was unexpected as I assumed the Time Machine restore would have copiedover these settings).

Follow this guide https://motu.com/techsupport/technotes/ ... igh-sierra on how to find and enable it. The UltraLite is working fine as before.
