16A sample rate resets to 44 KHz when hitting play

I'm having a problem with sample rate playback on my MOTU 16A. Running Thunderbolt and ethernet for the interface from my iMAC, El Capitan. MOTU drivers and firmware are up to date. I set the MOTU to 96 KHz sample rate from the web GUI, and internal clock. Load a file into my software, Wavelab 8.5, which is also 96 KHz sample rate. Press play in Wavelab, and the 16A screen flashes and changes the sample rate to 44 KHz. The playback stutters and then stops. Hit play again and the playback is at the wrong rate, 44 KHz. I cannot get 96 KHz playback to hold.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I can't even find a way to change the playback rate from Wavelab, other than from the file sample rate, which is already 96 KHz.
