I have a Tascam US 20X20 and i want to connect a standalone MOTU 896MK3 via ADAT to expend 8 mic channel, is that possible ? It seem over complicated

If you want to use the 896 as your clock master (as described in the link Mike references above), you will only need one optical cable. If you want to use your Tascam interface's clock, you will need two optical cables; the first to get signal to your Tascam and the second to send clock to the MOTU. Alternately, you can use wordclock via BNC to send clock to the 896. If it is not the master clock, you will need to set the 896 to receive its clock from whatever source you decide to use.
Although it may be a tad complicated to set up the 896 to operate the way you want it to, once you do so, you should not have to do it again. And you won't have to keep the 896 connected to your computer as it will store the settings and operate stand-alone.
