896 mk3 Hybrid - Firewire "Bandwidth not available." message

Post by tonomud »

Just bought an 896 mk3 Hybrid to replace my old-school FW400 Motu 8 pre. Already had the newest MOTU Audio drivers installed (1.6 73220) on my Mac (running 10.11.6). Connected the 896 via one of the Apple thunderbolt to FW800 adapters. Nothing else connected to either Thunderbolt bus. Restarted the computer. Sample rate set to 44100, all Optical input/output banks are disabled. Unit is set to factory defaults otherwise (I just did the reset). Nothing else connected to the 896...just a single FW800 cable and the power cable.

In the Motu Audio Setup program, I'm seeing the following message:

"Bandwidth not available. Please reduce the number of devices on the bus, reduce the sample rate, or disable some banks."

What does this mean, and what can/should I do about it? Did some searching and didn't find the exact same issue anywhere. I'll submit a tech note to MOTU, but thought I'd also check with you folks here.

Reset your ports by resetting the NV RAM for starters. Can't hurt and may help.

Why did you do that? Try again with the unit just set to default. Get it working before you mess with the settings.

NVRAM / PRAM reset did the trick, thanks for the memory jog!
