Motu 828MK2 and 2408MK2

Post by coriolis1986 »

Hi all.

I have Motu 828 Mk2 Firewire and want to expand the number of input/output channels. My friend sells Motu 2408 Mk2.

Is it possible to use a 2408 for channel expansion by connecting it to 828 via:

a) firewire cable
b) adat optical cable?

Do I need to make any software settings for this?

Thanks.

An ADAT optical cable lets you use the 2408 to add 8 channels to the 828. Normally, you create an aggregate device to see all 16 channels. The manuals cover this.

Am I right, that 2408 mk2 allows connect external modules with additional 8 i/o pair of channels?

So I can total expand a number of channels up to 32 :

Mac -(fw400)-> 828mk2 -(adat)-> 2408mk2 -(adat)-> 2408mk2 -(adat)-> 2408mk2 -(adat)

No. The 2408 in stand alone mode supports 8 channels analog to ADAT optical.

Unless connected to a 424 card in a PCI slot, a 2408 operates in stand alone only.

You can use the 2408 like any 8 channel AD/DA converter that passes the digital signal in ADAT optical format. Only the 828mkII will be directly connected to your computer. The 2408 will connect to the 828 via optical cables. You do not need to create an aggregate device; the 2408's 8 channels will be available in the 828's CueMix mixer.

If you want more from the 2408, you need the companion MOTU PCI or PCIe card and a computer that accepts said card.
