Google Chrome (59.xx) crashes on MAC

Post by burn4ever »

Hey,
does anybody have the same issue by using chrome with the Motu Track16?
By starting a video or audio file Chrome browser crashes. This happens with no other browser like Firefox or Safari, but in Chrom only when the Track16 is powered on.

The current build is Version 59.0.3071.115. 59.xx doesn't really mean anything.

Unlike other browsers, you can place a trouble ticket with Google. The easiest way is to Report an Issue after clicking on About in the Chrome menu. Normally, the ones I report are resolved in a few hours.

You will have to be very specific about what happened including any error messages.

I would reboot my Mac first and see if the problem is repeatable.

Hey Mike,
yes it´s the 59.0.3071.115 (64bit) version.

I´ll send a error report to Google a week ago but have no response till today.
Rebooting didn´t solve the problem.

It would interest me if any other Track16 user has the same issue?

Google has had a few builds in between.

Do you have the latest MOTU audio drivers installed? New ones were released last week. I would start there.

My 828mkII does not crash Chrome — never has.

What Chrome extensions are you using? An extension conflict is the only thing that makes sense.

You can disable all Chrome extensions then add them back. Generally, you'll find that some are outdated and get in the way — I always do when I go through that process.

I use Chrome as it saves hours per day in my job in a way that no other browser can (yes hours a day — really). Certain functions happen in less than a second that take 15 minutes in Safari or 20 in Firefox. I check now and then to see if it's still true.

I find Google quite responsive when I submit a trouble ticket. They never respond directly but usually restarting Chrome after a couple of hours makes the issue go away. Since my primary app is web based, it's easy to see if it's been fixed or not. Last week, I had an issue where clicking on an embedded link opened a new page but made me log in to see it. I reported at 8am, rebooted at noon and it was fixed.

I have the same issue with Motu Track 16 and Chrome on Mac. Just bought the interface today so a bit disappointed that I'm having issues. As soon as the Track 16 is unplugged Chrome works fine.

Using latest drivers, firmware and Chrome.

Have you submitted this trouble ticket to Google also? Call up Settings in Chrome to find the link.

Entirely possible

You need to be able to read these to find the conflict. I'd call Apple support and have them look at this.

Just for the record, problems with the driver are not restricted to Chrome. Going to about:support in Firefox on my MacPro running 10.11.6 will cause a crash when the 828mk3 is on. I have the latest driver installed (v1.6.73220).

What did MOTU have to say when you submitted your TechLink?

It´s really disappointing. I don´t know how often I have to send the error report to apple. Still have the problem :-(

OS support is now free. Go to the web site and schedule a call back. Apple Techs can give you a temporary app that lets them log into your Mac and observe what is happening in real time, read crash reports and console logs.

They may not know where the offending code came from but they should be able to tell you what it is. From there, Google is your friend.

The problem is going to be a conflict with something that shouldn’t be on your system. Generally, it’s something ancient or a bit of crapware that was poorly written or didn’t follow the Apple Toolkit.

When it happened to me years ago, the offending items were HP print utilities from 2005, the Bresink Temperature monitor, a .kxt that loaded with CD Spin Dr X and Finale 2009 Help files.

Apple helped me find the bresink and roxio problems as they showed up in crash reports. They didn’t know where they came from — only that it wasn’t Apple. Searching hidden system files, I found the offending code and trashed it.

I found the HP and Finale problems in Console logs. One crashed DP; the other screwed up Time Machine backups. Observing the problems in real time was the key. Why did old code cause a problem? Don’t know and don’t care. Removing it did the trick and I was fine.

Observing how the Apple techs worked taught me a lot. I’ve had a few such problems since but was able to find and fix them on my own.

I use Chrome in my day job. For certain tasks, it’s the only browser that does what I need. I’ve not had a freeze or crash in years.
