UAD Apollo 16 & Motu 828 Hardware

Post by pgaudion »

Hi there - anyone using UAD Apollo and Motu 828mk3 (or similar) hardware together in DP9? I'm needing 32 inputs for a live recording and just seeing if anyone has tried using both UAD and Motu into DP9 - cheers - phil

I haven't done it, but spec-wise, if the UAD has optical ADAT in or out, so does the 828. Just be sure to sync the receiving unit to the sending unit and you should be fine. Set up the sending unit's channels to output out the desired ADAT channels using its routing capabilities. Then use the receiving unit's mixing/routing software for the big mix to the monitors and such. The DAW will see all of the inputs on the receiving unit, of course.

ADAT is a standard, and I doubt either company does anything funky with that standard! :-)

If you meant "Will the two drivers aggregate together well on a Mac with them both plugged into the Mac," that answer someone else will have to provide. I would use the ADAT method myself.

Hey Terry - it's actually an Apollo 16 mkII which doesn't have Adat

So I want use all 16ins of the Apollo and plug in the MOTU 828mk3 also and use all 16ins on that also

I know I'll need to use Word clock sync from the Apollo to my 828 but just want to check all of it comes up in the HW setup if anyone has tried this before

Ah! I see. I hope someone chimes in soon - I do know that Macs will allow aggregating multiple interfaces (unlike PC's), and that both show up as separate devices with all their inputs and outputs visible, but I don't know if the stability of the UAD and 828 is good or not in that situation. Using the word clock will be a plus, though, I'm sure!

Shift click and select both interfaces in the DP audio interface dialog box and see if it works.

Back when we were all working on G4s, Aggregate Device was a common subject and there are many old threads on this — 48 pages when I did a search on those terms.

MOTU, likewise has TechNotes on the subject.

An older thread but new to me. A short question first, more detail below:
How did you connect the Apollo 16 and the 828mk? ADAT?

I just got a UAD Apollo x8p in order to take advantage of its Unison preamps and have been using the 828es for a few months now but now want to figure out how to use them together in either DP9.5 or Cubase 10. I am able to access both if I connect the 828es to the x8p via TB but then can only use one or the other in the DAWs as they are considered separate drivers. I also tried connecting the 828es to the x8p using optical ADAT lightpipes but don't seem able to find the 828es I/O anywhere in the UAD Console. I also haven't found anything specifically addressing connecting these two units to use within a DAW so any info would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

I think I've figured how to do this on my own but only thanks to Mike and Phil's posts and video along with a couple of YouTube videos.

Solution:
I have the x8p connecting one of its TB ports to my iMac on a TB3 cable and the other to the 828es' TB2 port via a TB3 to TB2 adapter.

The 828es is throughput to the iMac as I can see it by itself on a AVB page where I can configure it.

The x8p is throughput as well as I can view it through UAD Console interface just as when it is running alone.

In the Audio MIDI I created an Aggregate Device selecting both Apollo and 828es as its components making the x8p the Clock Source. I renamed the new Device and can open it in both DP and Cubase as the audio driver. Note that I can still reset the driver to either 828es or x8p in either DAW when necessary. I can also piggyback a MOTU 8pre into the 828es setup via ADAT making for many inputs.

In the Aggregate Device the Ins and Outs tabs indicate which inputs and outputs named respectively within UAD Console and MOTU AVB are assigned to which order in the spectrum. Useful to consult as such a large amount of I/O can get confusing.

Very cool. The first time I created the Device in Audio MIDI and opened up Cubase, Cubase crashed but worked fine once I restarted but hopefully that was a momentary glitch and not an omen. I'm quite surprised how relatively little applicable info I could find as a solution about my original question online until I learned the term "aggregate device" so hopefully this may be of some assistance to others.

One more point to add to this. I learned that the 828es can be set up as an Optical device so that it can connect with lightpipes to the Apollo as an ADAT extension. The I/O of the 828es will then be accessible in the UAD Console. This allows for using the 828es inputs to be used with UAD plugins on recording.
