24/IO repair or replace.

Post by swampfox »

Seems like my old 24/IO has died. I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro an need to find another audio interface. Not sure what to get. Don't know if the 24/ is repairable or not. I don't have to have 24 ins and outs, but it sure is nice. Seems like thunderbolt id taking over and my mac has no thunderbolt ports and I really don't like the design of the round Mac Pros. I would like to hear some advice about this.

You don't say what is wrong with it.

It will work fine sometimes. At times it will not be recognized after power up. It sits down after several minutes whin it works at all. Sometimes it might run for an hour or more. Makes me think it is a hardware issue with the unit. Could be the internal power supply I guess.

Sounds like a hardware issue. You should contact MOTU. Sometimes they'll send you out a refurbished unit for a modest flat fee.

A bad power supply would make my list of possible causes, too.

MOTU doesn't publish parts lists or schematics for their hardware. If a refurb unit is still available, a call to MOtU will let you know.

Otherwise, a power supply is something that most repair techs can troubleshoot and repair (a bulging capacitor is pretty easy to diagnose).

I emailed MOTU support. They say they don't support this unit anymore. Say they have no spare parts. I ordered a used one and just Got it in and hooked up today. Works fine. I make an attempt to fix my other one my self if I can't find someone else to tackle it. MOTU won't provide schematics. Bummer! I would like to pose a question to the group. What are some of you guys using as an audio I/O for a pre thunderbolt mac pro?

I live near a used music store, and a used computer store. I try to take advantage of what ever comes in. Anything with Firewire and USB.

828mkII. Sounds great, hardware mixer is fine when hardware reverb is used, and just enough inputs when combined with an ADAT expansion mic pre module to do a drum kit (nine mics) and band. $200 used. I have a spare on hand, and a spare Mac Pro hex core, too.

If it's a power supply, screen or other serviceable component, should be easy to diagnose with an identical unit that works.
