mk2 828 through adat

Post by Miguel »

Hello I got a couple of 828 mk2 and one has the firewire broken, but the rest, screen and optical (throught tos link) works. I wonder if I can work with it through an adat card, I suppose there should be not problem, but I have to get and adat card for my G5 (I know is old but..). Has anyone tried something like this and which PCI adat card, I mean RME or whatever , I need a pci card chip simple, has to be PCIx, just adat input and output.
Thanks

If you have two, connect one into the other through ADAT. Many old threads on how to do this.

I don't need so many inputs as this, 8 is enough. Just want to know the experience of someone using the 828 with Adat through a PCI card and, which card?. I had a look of the PCI Adat cards but the ones I saw are quite expensive, for been just an Adat interface. I would like to know if there're cheaper ones, and if anyone has tried to work this way, the 828 and PCI Adat without firewire.

Do you need PCIx or PCIe? If your G5 has 8 RAM slots, it's PCIe. If 4, then PCIx (early) or PCIe (late). They are not interchangeable.

PCIx is backwards compatible with PCI (G3/G4) but the reverse is not true. There are old PCI cards out there but, if not compatible with PCIx, they can fry the card and/or the G5 motherboard. Fun? You bet. If you have 4 slots, you'll need confirmation from RME that the card you found will actually work in your machine.

Anyway, the only PCIe ADAT card I know that is Mac compatible is the RME HDSPe AIO

According to RME, the v. 1.6 PPC drivers are still available. The v. 1.73 drivers are for Intel Mac Pros before 2013.

For far less, you can find a used MOTU 2408 or mkII / mk III. You'll need the MOTU 424-PCIe or 424 PCIx card but it will work with your G5.

Like Mike says, if you have two 828s and one has FW working, you don't need a PCI ADAT card, just a couple of ADAT cables. If you only need 8 channels, you don't even need the second 828.
