Which PCI card do I need for my Dual G4

Post by BonDarker »

I suppose someone somewhere has this info all laid out but unless I word my "search" just right I get, "no results found."
So, I'll stop and ask for directions.

My grandson has expressed an interest in learning about recording, etc. I have a mothballed Apple G4 Dual 867 MHz Power PC along with a MOTU 2408 mk3, 1224 and an MTP-AV. They have been packed away for some time and I'll likely need to look for a new battery for the computer as well. Might even add some RAM as 2 gigs ain't nothing anymore...

I have the original PCI-324 too but I might as well look to upgrade at least the PCI card before setting it all up for him. It is all older gear but it is still good equipment and WAY MORE than anything I had (or was given) when I was his age.

Where do I find the compatibility chart for Mac computers and the appropriate PCI card? Or just let me know which of the 3 models of the PCI-424 do I look for for the computer mentioned above?

Funny - I've been into the Firewire, USB & Thunderbolt level for so long it's hard to even think about PCI setups now.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance

The 324 will work in your G4.

The upgrade is the 424. This adds CueMix (not supported by the 324) plus the ability to connect 4 instead of 3 units.

The 424 PCIx is backwards compatible with the PCI-424. The reverse is not true but that is only an issue in G5s with 8 PCI slots.

Neither is compatible with PCIe (late G5 and Intel Macs) and vise-versa. Again, not an issue for you.

MOTU has a trade-up program for registered owners of the PCI-324 and has illustrations here:

Sometimes, you can find the 424 or 424x on eBay. Again, a G4 won't know the difference.
