Trouble Syncing MOTU 8Pre with MOTU 828X

Post by JerikCenteno »

So, I’m trying to use the 8Pre as an expansion for my pre amps for my MOTU 828x via ADAT. My main problem is I can’t get it to work.

I’ve done:

8Pre (1-8 bank [Right output]) --> 828 (Optical Bank A)

8 Pre (ADAT Out [Bottom bank, right output]) --> 828 (Optical Bank A)

Currently:

8 Pre (1-8 in/out) --> 828 (Optical Bank A out/in)

My current problem is that my 828 isn’t seeming to see the ADAT connection. The lights on the 8Pre are fine except for the sample rate that keeps on blinking.

When I would just take the 1-8 In of my 8Pre to the ADAT Out of my 828, the 8Pre Sample Rate would stop blinking and the the 828 would see the ADAT. At that same token, I believe the ADAT Inputs were blowing up and scratchy.

I have slaved my 8Pre to my 828 and have turned my according Optical Banks on for my 828.

I’m running out of ideas. Apparently there’s this “special function” that I have to turn on or find or that just works when using an 8Pre with an 828, but I can’t find it nor does plugging light pipe cables into these units just do anything aside from giving me a headache.

You should only have to use the one output on the 8pre.
The one on top the reads 1-8 to an optical in on the 828.
make sure your sample rates on your 828 match the 8pre and it should just show up in DP as an additional 8 ADAT inputs.

Did that, still not working. The 8Pre isn’t even seeing input when I’m using ADAT. I manually set the sample rates in MOTU AudioSetup both to 441 and yet the sample rate on my 8Pre is still blinking AND the 828 still isn’t seeing ADAT In.

The 828 optical ins and outs need to be set as ADAT in the MOTU Audio Console - check if they are set to Toslink.

Typically you set one to be the master timing source and the other to be the slave off of that, using the MOTU Audio Console or the front panel.
