It caused so many oddball problems with connected devices that I turned that off many, many years ago. I would advise you do the same.

Or at least set it for a nice, lengthy delay!

I had problems with my FW devices waking from sleep beginning with OS 10.6. I changed to Never Sleep in the Energy panel and never looked back. When I got rid of my spinners, I noticed a drop in my energy bill. I let the displays go to sleep after 15 minutes and that works fine.

At some point, I will get a USB interface and retire my 828mkII, the only FW device I still use—all others have been retired. I may reengage Sleep at that time but only if there are no problems.

In my case the MOTU is the only device which ever caused problems related to sleep mode. I am using sleepmode for several reasons and do not want to change my habits just because some faulty drivers.
Hope that this gets fixed in some driver update.

Likely this is all due to the MOTU boxes handling all sample-rate sync internally within the hardware, and not within the drivers like most other interfaces appear to do. (There is no sample rate conversion done by these drivers either, at least not with the Windows drivers.) So, when your system goes to sleep, it loses sync.

Often, turning off the MOTU box before awaking from sleep and then turning the interface on again will solve the issue, if I recall correctly from reading here on the forum.

Hello guys,
thanks God I found this thread about this issue...I though my new MacBookPro Mid 2015 was faulty xD

I'm having the same exact problem, same crash report (which I attach), any news from MOTU about ?
I can just set sleep on "never" but would be nice to have it sorted..!

MBP Mid 2015 with Sierra (latest software, latest MOTU Drivers)->Thunderbolt to FW800-> MOTU 828 mk3 . Laptop crashes while waking up from sleep mode, reporting the following:

If it is an 828mkIII Hybrid, use the USB connection.

Intel never supported FW. Apple hasn't supported FW since 2011. That they make a TB-FW adapter should not be interpreted as FW support—it isn't.

Re: 828 MK3 with OSX Sierra bugs - same with Ultralite mk3

Post by stripeyjoe »

Hi all,
I'm getting the same issue with my Ultralite mk3 hybrid, I thought it was initially due to an old driver as I recently upgraded to Sierra. I downloaded the Nov 16 driver but it did not fix the issue.
Suppose the next thing to do would be to use USB instead but then I'll need to dig out the PSU from the box stored in the loft...
I see there's a newer driver published for the newer interfaces, just wondering when they are going to issue a fix for us 'legacy' users...

Don't like to leave the Mac on 'no sleep' as it's a family one that tends to get left on. Having it go to sleep is preferable to having to shut down each time it's used.

[What year and model Mac?]

It's a late 2012 2.3 GHz i7 Mac Mini, I'm running the MOTU off of the firewire port.

I didn't realize there were any 2012 Macs with a FW port. Anyway, the issue will be no different than any other FW device connected to an Intel Mac. Your connection should be more reliable over USB, even though you'll have to dig out the power supply. You could try FW over TB with the adapter but again, you'll need external power.

The basic issue is unchanged. Intel doesn't support FireWire — never did. Apple's continued support, as it were, was a kludge. Intel does support Thunderbolt but only a part of the FW spec is supported — this is not the same as FW support.

Guess I'll need to dig out the PSU from where-ever it may be! It's a shame, it was working perfectly until I upgraded to Sierra.

Thanks for your input into this!

Re: 828 MK3 with OSX Sierra bugs

Post by midilifestyle »

I'm getting the exact same crashes with sierra and the 828 mk3.
I also get them when I use a USB cable, oddly enough
All my software is updated. The 'fix' that Travis posted didn't make a difference.

What are the chances that this will be fixed?

Unless that's simply a rhetorical question, your best bet would be to contact MOTU directly since this is a user-run board and no affiliated with MOTU, Inc.

Are you going through a hub?

Many USB hubs go to sleep with a Mac but don't wake — you have to pull the cable and plug it back in. I went through many till I found this cheapo unit from Amazon that doesn't misbehave in this manner.
