2 spdif sources into a Motu 828 mk3 hybrid?

Post by Majshumlan »

Hi

Is there any way to connect multiple spdif sources to a Motu 828 mk3?
Can the adat inputs be used in some way?

Firstly, what are you trying to accomplish, and why would it require a digital feed?

Second:
Where would you plug them in? (A "Y" cord cannot be used, if that is what you are asking.)

The ADAT inputs and outputs are useful if you have another device with optical outs or ins. They can be configured as 8-channel ADAT or as 2-channel TOSLINK. I use one of those as a loop-back (plugging the out into the in) to bring a signal from my DAW into the DSP in the 828 mk3 Hybrid so I can use that as an external processor. But that does not appear to be what you are needing to do, so some clarification would be helpful.

Sorry, I'm afraid you will have to record one of them via analog signals, but the quality will not suffer when using the 828 due to its high quality DACs.

Looking at the unit, I do not see an S/PDIF digital output. Could you provide a link to the unit you are using? What I found must not be the correct unit.

Either way, you cannot combine two S/PDIF outputs into one without having a separate unit to plug the second one into.

As Terry suggests, if you have SPDIF available on both RCA and optical, you could do it, but you would have to make sure everything is synced to the same digital clock. As Terry also notes, given proper gain staging it is unlikely that audio quality is going to suffer significantly if there is an DA/AD in the middle of the transfer.
