828mk3 with Cuemix inside Ableton?

Post by ft13 »

Hi everyone!

Ive been using an 828mk3 for a few years now and ive never really used Cuemix before, other than doing some eq'ing with some external synths.

Im curious, since this 828mk3 has Cuemix built into and has effects that will use its own DSP power instead of my cpu in my mac mini, how do you use it in conjunction with Ableton Live?

How do i configure the outputs for me to use the fx in Cuemix instead of others that can potentially just crush my cpu.

Also, i noticed that the fx cant be used when im working at 192KHz. This true?

Thanks in advance!

There are two returns coming out of Cuemix - one called "Return" and one called "Reverb". They appear just as channels do in your input devices list. (Labeled Return 1, Return 2, Reverb 1, Reverb 2.) Those are your access points to the DSP within Cuemix and the 828mk3. You set which channel bus to assign to the returns via the Motu Audio Console. You can then send a mix out that, including its EQ and compression settings. I hope I wrote that clearly enough!

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately, what you stated isnt what i see on Cuemix nor my Motu Audio Setup.

Ill see if i can play around with it, but i still need to know what to do inside Ableton for it to "see" Cuemix.

No, you misunderstood me. You should see these returns (return 1&2, Reverb 1&2) in the audio inputs section of Ableton.

Of course, you've still got to get audio from the computer into the 828mk3 and back out again. You could use analog loopbacks, but that wastes an analog input and output.

What I do is I loop the S/PDIF out to the S/PDIF in with a cable so I can send into Cuemix from my computer/DAW (or you could use your optical ADAT in/out in a similar loopback and get 8 separate channels of in/out), then tap the Reverb returns for the Reverb. Doing it this way, I can use the S/PDIF input for my compression and EQ effects.

However, the reverb can only be accessed via the Reverb return input in the DAW. It is a global reverb, not several separate ones.

Sorry, but still dont see what youre talking about.

My "default" returns in Ableton are a Reverb and a Delay labeled "A Reverb" and "B Delay".

And the way you explained all the cable loopbacks with SPDIF, i have none of those cables, so that aint happening.

I thought it was as simple as just redirecting an output of a MIDI or audio track (or heck, even a return so i can send it to multiple tracks) to Cuemix itself? Can it not do this?

No, you cannot send signal directly into the Cuemix mixer without a loopback strategy. You can use two guitar cords, so I think you can manage it without digital cables.

I did not say they were in your default returns. I said they were in your ASIO input devices list.
