DP 3.02 + OS 9.2.2 live monitoring not working with my 828.

Post by part12studios »

Hi there,

First of all I think there might be a program I need called MOTU 828 CueMix Plus... but I don't know where I can find this for an OS 9.2.2 system. It almost reads like I need this program to monitor, but I don't know for sure. I bought the device without any CD roms with it.

That said if it's not needed, the issue I'm having is that I can't hear anything over monitoring.. I can record sound fine in Digital Performer 3.02.. and it will play back just fine.. over the monitor outputs for playback.. I really think the unit itself is 100% fine.. just a matter of figuring out how to hear things monitor in realtime as sound is being played into it.. nothing comes out of headphones or the stereo outputs.

The only issue is the ability to hear the sound coming through before or while recording (i can see the recording waves form in DP.. I just hear no sound.

Any advice would be incredible helpful on this!

Thanks!
Caleb

Cuemix likely cannot be acquired for System 9.2.2 anymore [Edit:Whoops! See below], but do not lose heart. Pretty much everything you could do using that program can be done via the front panel of the 828. So, just study those sections of the manual. It is fiddly with the small knobs, but it all makes sense how they laid out the controls.

Actually, there IS a download for something for the 828 on this page: http://motu.com/techsupport/technotes/driverlog

Scroll down to the Audio section and the "828 Original" item, click it to expand it, and select the "Legacy Mac" tab - there is a OS9 item there. I don't know if that is a version of Cuemix or not, though.

It says, "MOTU Audio Installer v 3.12/2.46 MAS (Release Date 2004-01-12)
Compatibility: OS9"

[Edit: Also the same download is listed in the "828mk2 FW" section]

Check in the setup menu, configure audio, input monitoring, direct hardware play through.
I'm on 7.24 but have been using DP since 2.7 or so and I've always used it that way.

Yes. You can set this all up within DP, and you don't need any external software (apart from whatever driver might have needed to be installed in 9.2.2).

Look for input monitor (or similar) in the menus. I can't recall, but I think there might be the little speaker icon on each track in the tracks overview. That's the input monitoring per track.

CueMix Plus is built into the hardware and not something you download. You need the correct drivers to access it, of course.

Here's the Macintosh manual. It assumes OS 9 although the minimum OS is 8.6. CueMix Plus begins page 37. The minimum version of DP is 2.42—see page 41. I don't think DP 3 is going to look much different than the manual shows.

Awesome feedback everyone! I'll explore each reply and see what happens.. i mean many something IS wrong with it? I recently got my hands on a 2408 mark 2 that I haven't tried out yet.. but i'm first wanting to see the 828 work as it should before I jump over.. kinda wanting to A/B test the two things to see if I can tell a difference (for Science!) :)

Thanks,

With the 2408, CueMix is part of the 424 PCI, PCIx or PCIe card. The earliest 2408 II units shipped with a 324 PCI card—these do not support CueMix. MOTU may still have the 424x available if yours came with a 324 card.

If you are runnng OS 9, you are running a G4 or earlier. The 424 and 424x cards are interchangeable (this is not true with the G5 but they won't run OS 9).

wait the 2408 has to work with a PCI card? I bought it thinking it was standalone like the 828. They both have FW400 ports wouldn't those just go into the computer? I didn't pay much for it so I guess it wasn't a huge mistake.. like $30..

ok i'm hoping i can get some help here.. the only way i could fix this last time was to reinstall OS9..

so i installed the OS9 driver for 828.. then i get errors that there we duplicates in the extension folder so i delete the 828 files and now it doesn't see the 828 at all.. I don't understand how OS9 handles drivers..

I redid the 828 driver installer as well.. still fails to see the 828..

I've reinstalled DP3.02 and i did a finder search for ANYTHING 828.. and still the 828 is simply not mentioned as a device to connect too..

rebooted numerous times as well to insure the changes took place / read by the system.

I'm completely baffled how one installation of a driver would jack things up so badly and no obvious way to uninstalling drivers or reverting or reinstalling or overwriting existing stuff.

bump..

To be clear I installed the drivers from the MOTU site linked below.. noting weird.. unless there is some unspoken rule you you must delete some files manually before installing a drive update in OS9?

I've never understood fully how drivers exist in OS9.. i know there is an extensions folder.. but that's about all I know of.. and I remember a friend saying it's pretty easy.. but i can't understand why i'd still have the problem if i 1. remove all 828 named files.. 2. reinstall DP3 3. and after that not being enough install the driver thing again.. and still not have DP3 see "MOTU 828" as a hardware device I can select..

The 2408 does not have a FW port. That's an AudioWire port, an older protocol. The purpose of that port is to connect to a PCI or PCIx card. A FW cable can usually be used but sometimes a little insulation has to be trimmed from the connector.

A 324 card can take up to three 2408s; the 424 can take up to four and has CueMix built in.

The 2408 can be used standalone as an extender to the 828 through the ADAT port to add 8 analog inputs. It also can be used to convert analog to ADAT or TASCAM to analog or back (8) or ADAT to TASCAM (24).

I still have my first gen 2408/PCI-324 and a dual-boot G4. It still works but I've not used it in OS 9 for years.

ok doing some testing and it seems that the driver took away the "828" name and replaced it with "firewire audio" instead.. that seems to work, but still no monitor signal.

so the front/back looks like this:
http://medias.audiofanzine.com/images/t ... 243615.jpg

it would seem like monitor would just be on by default or something.. like not software driven.. and yet i hear nothing.. but then i can record and play back through the same stereo outputs on the back.. so it doesn't feel like a hardware problem.. seeing the ports work for playback..

but then again monitoring input in realtime would almost seem like something you'd want to be hard wired, but i guess in some studio situations maybe this isn't the case..
