MOTU Firewire and OS 10.12 Sierra

Post by papageno »

I have read the Motu compatibility announcement regarding their audio interfaces. There is no mention about Firewire interfaces' compatibility with OS 10.12
I have a good old Ultralite mk3 Firewire version, connected to Apple's Thunderbolt2 > Firewire adapter. Everything is running great under 10.11.6

Until someone can verify that Motu FW interfaces work with 10.12 I won't update of course.

Edit: I will post the same question to Motu official support and when they answer, I post the response.

Motu tech did answer.
The interface SHOULD work but the official testing is still ongoing. Motu will soon update the compatibility info.

So as I understand, there are no reasons that the interface shouldn't work. Motu is of course being careful here and it is wise. They can only announce the compatibility when they have tested enough. So you either wait or i stall Sierra...

I would like to try but I do not have a time frame for hassle if things go wrong.

So far my 828mk3 is working fine in Sierra. It goes via a FW400 cable to a FW400 to FW800 adapter and then into a FW800 to Thunderbolt adapter then into my MacBook Pro... ;)

I can add my two cents here...

Installed 10.12 update over 10.11.6. UltraLite mk3 FW keeps working. No problems with anything so far... DP 9.12, Finale 25, PlogueBidule, my Pianotek, NI, etc plugins- all work ok so far.

Welcome!

Many of us post our equipment and systems as they pertain to MOTU as part of our signatures. This helps with trouble shooting and is highly recommended.

Reading my signature, you will know that I use an 828mkII and am running Sierra.

UPDATE: after installing the Nov 1st Audio Drivers my MBP now crashes on sleep... Was working fine with the earlier drivers...

The Nov. 1st drivers (1.6 71458) are causing my iMac to crash on sleep.

Here's my setup:
UltraLite Mk3
iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011
macOS Sierra 10.12.2
FW 800 from Mac to LaCie external drive, FW 800->400 cable from LaCie to UltraLite.

I'll try a direct connection from Mac to UltraLite and report back if anything changes.

Not great help, I suppose, but *sleep* is stated not convenient for any DAW setup.
AFAICT, it has always been since OS 9 days.

I do not let my Mac go to sleep when using any DAW. FW devices and sleep have been problematic ever since the Intel CPU. Intel has never supported FW.

As am I.

Are you running it with a direct connection or through a hub? If through another device or hub, try a direct connection and see if that changes anything.

Firewire ports can become corrupted. If you have not reset the PRAM/NV RAM in awhile, do so. This restores the defaults and often causes FW ports to behave again. If your FW ports become unresponsive, this normally does the trick.

Well, sleep worked fine with no issue before the Nov 1st update.
My 828 is also the main sound for my Mac when not working in a DAW... So I like that it can go to sleep occasionally if I'm away from it for too long...
