MOTU 828 mk2 / Frewire problem

Post by BRAD2223 »

Hi everyone, hope you can help.

I recently bought a second-hand MOTU 828 mk2, which I’m having major problems with.
No matter how I try, I can’t get the computer/s to recognise the 828 mk2.
I have tried the following actions;
Downloaded all the legacy audio drivers from the MOTU website, none of which appear to work. The same error message comes up; “No devices found”.
I’ve tried manual resets many times.
I’ve installed the 828 mk2 on 2x Apple Mac Pro’s using OS 10.6.8. Snow Leopard, Apple Mac PowerPC using 10.5.8. a laptop using Win 7 and finally, a PC with a new PCI 3 port Firewire card (Texas Ins chip) with Win XP, all with the same results.
Tried 4 different Firewire cables including 2 brand new ones.
Every single driver I tried, when run, only shows the ‘General’ tab. Clicking ‘Edit’ only states that “No devices could be found ”
In the System Profiler (Apple) no devices can be seen under Firewire and the same applies to Win XP Pro under Device Manager.
I’ve tested the Firewire ports on the computers by connecting them together in Target Mode, all seems okay.
The 828 mk2 appears to work okay without the Firewire plugged in, but when it is, the screen freezes on CueMix and all controls are inoperative.
Obviously, nothing shows within Cubase etc.
Firewire is essential in order for me to use the 828 within Cubase.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Contact MOTU for troubleshooting help. It may be the unit, not your setup.

Hi
I did that last night, and since posting here.
Their response was as follows;

" The symptoms suggest that the Firewire ports on the 828 are damaged.
I regret to inform you that MOTU no longer has parts available for the 828mkII. We are not able to accept this model in for repair."

Strange really as I never 'hot-plug' Firewire gear !
Doesn't sound too good (pun intended).

The last 828mkII was made in 2007. I know because I bought mine on close-out as the mkIII was introduced. Mine is still going great but it is nine years old.

The FW port is a known issue. Others have reported power supply issues also. Someone once posted that you can get the parts at Mouser but never gave the part numbers. MOTU has never released a part list either.
