who owns an 828mk3 firewire?- direct playthru questions -

Post by detroitdiesel »

Hello, I've used an 828mk2 forever. Its clock has gone funny and I plan to replace with 828mk3 firewire. I run an optical adat interface as well, and may plan to buy second adat interface for 24tracks of live monitoring. (like a reel to reel 24) Two questions:

1) Does the mk3 offer the same direct playthrough option as the mk2? (I mean selectable form the dp menu) I used to select this option and all was well. I dont want to set up a cuemix mix. I monitor all outputs live through their own channel of a physical mixer. Easy Peasy.

2) Does the MK3 allow direct playthrough of it's analog 8 plus 8 optical PLUS the second bank of 8 optical at 24 bit?

Thanks, DD

I think the answer is yes, but I suggest you just download the manual and see whether the 828-3 is suitable for your application. It's descriptions are quite detailed. And, if you are going to be routing audio back and forth between the 828-3 and other devices via ADAT, I suggest using wordclock for timing rather than relying on ADAT timing.

Thanks for the reply guys. I would imagine it does what I want from what I read in the manual...I was looking to see if people who own this exact unit have actually done this exact thing. The MKII allowed one adat interface to monitor live so I'm imagining that this will allow two adats. Worst case, Ill have only 8 tracks of adat which will be what I had until last Thursday.

I'll tie my 828mk1 in for 8 more (though not zero-lat monitoring)

Thanks, DD

Those people will be hard to find, even here.

The 828mkIII FW was not on the market very long. It was replaced by the 828mkIII Hybrid soon after introduction allowing connection via FW and USB.

The current 828x replaced the two FW ports with a single Thunderbolt port but still retains USB. The reason for one TB port was to keep costs in line.

Mike, I had my 828 mk3 FW several years before the hybrid came out and I don't think it was that new when I got it.

DD I don't know exactly what the configuration is that you are trying to assess. I have had 16 channels of adat running between a 828-2 and a 2408-2 along with 8 channels of analog coming into the 828-3. I was able to see all 24 channels in DP.

The mkIII FW was released in 2008 and discontinued in 2010. The Hybrid was introduced in 2011 and is still shipping. Interpret it how you like. My take is that there are fewer of the FW than the Hybrid.

They were still selling them around here long after that. I guess there was a big load of them on the turnip wagon when it cross the mountains into Vancouver.
