Single AVB unit to CPU + Control

Post by fokof »

Hi group

I have to plug a single Ultralite AVB to CPU via Cat5/6 (100' away) + want to control iPad/iPhone , what's the best way ?

Ultralite in switch , switch to Router + CPU ?

Any 10/100/1000 switch will do ?
(I know that MOTU want's to sell us their switch)

From the FAQ at MOTU's site:

"Q: Do MOTU AVB interfaces work with third-party AVB switches?
A: Yes, but the MOTU AVB Switch is much more affordable than third-party switches.

Q: Do MOTU AVB interfaces work with third-party Ethernet switches?
A: For audio over the network, you need an AVB switch, but for controlling the hardware via your favorite desktop or mobile browser, any Ethernet switch will work."

At $295, this sounds right to me. I can't find an AVB switch with fewer than 8 ports besides the MOTU. If you just want the control, any Ethernet switcher should do the trick.

From the tech specs I can see from the MOTU site , it is an 10/100/1000 switch.

Does it have something particular that other 10/100/1000 switch doesn't have?

Does the 802.1 standard require something particular ?

I think the 10/100/1000 switch you're referencing... say, a Linksys or-what-have-you... is a basic Ethernet switch, which would be fine if all you want is the controls. If you want the switcher to pass audio, it has to be an AVB switch.

At least, as I understand this.

10/100 is a basic switch 10/100/1000 is the more performant.
I already have one of those.

I'm not an IT guy , that's why I ask here , maybe someone knows.....

I'm not sure why you even need the switch.

That's part of my original question.

You have another solution ?

NO. There's not another solution. One more time:

If you want to control the AVB device with a WiFi mobile device like a iPhone, an ordinary switch will work. Try the one you have and see.

You only need an AVB switch if you need to pass audio through the switch, i.e. distributed to other AVB interfaces.

Since you're only connecting 1 interface and want to control it from a distance, an ordinary Ethernet switch is enough.

I had a response from MOTU and looks like I don't need to pass through a switch in order to have both Recording and control over other iDevices.

Thanx

After a couple of exchange with Magic Dave , the conclusion is that I have to plug the AVB unit AND the CPU in the router in order to have both AVB sound and control with CPU and iDevices.
