896 Driver Crashes Repeatedly on 10.10.3

Post by evantron3000 »

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) and a MOTU 896 (the old FW 400 version). It's been working fine, but recently when I plug it in, the driver seems to crash/reset repeatedly and temporarily locks my system up between resets.

The reason I say "reset" is because if I open the Sound>Input system preferences pane and plug in the 896 (which goes FW 400 cable> FW400/800 adaptor> FW800/Thunderbolt adaptor), the MOTU driver window pops up, and it shows in the input device list. The input level will show whatever happened to be coming through right when I plugged it in, and then the Input list and MOTU driver window will clear out for a few seconds, the computer will freeze, and then it will repopulate. This happens over and over again.

If I try to open Logic Pro X or Garageband, the program will crash when I try to select the MOTU as the input device.

The console log shows Core Audio resetting each time.

My computer is on OS X 10.10.3, and the MOTU works on two other Macbook Pro's (13-inch Retina). One is running 10.10.2, and another is on some version of 10.8.

Has anyone else experienced this on the latest OS X? or is this likely a software problem with my specific machine?

I've reinstalled the MOTU driver using the Universal Audio installer, and tried via safe login (not safe boot as that would disable the driver) and the symptom remains unchanged.

I believe I am seeing similar behavior with my 1248. Yosemite has been a nightmare despite being "qualified".

I'm definitely on the latest drivers available on the MOTU site. I had tried reinstalling them, but I hadn't tried actually removing them manually first. So, I just did that and am going to give it another try tonight.

I haven't contacted MOTU support because it's not my device. Belongs to a friend/bandmate I play music with (of course it works on his computer). I'll see if there's a way I can do that though.
