Motu 828 MkIII firewire malfunction

Post by Tidwells@aol.com »

While setting up for a live gig yesterday, my Motu 828 MK3 (firewire only, not hybrid) quit working right- It was taking about 10 minutes to load "Cuemix FX" and then DP 8.07 would seem to recognize it, but no sound would come in or out of it. I re-booted it several times with no success. I finally performed a reset to factory default settings and it seems to be working fine now. I've had this unit for years and this has never happened before. Is this a sign of impending doom? I thought maybe it had a battery inside that needs to be replaced, but as far as I can tell from the manual and Motu's website, there is no mention of an internal battery in the Motu 828 MK3. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

After working fine for the last 2 gigs, my Motu 828 MK3 (firewire only) is acting up again. This time I had to reset to factory default settings about 7 times and then randomly click knobs to finally get it to work. Even so, at first it was playing back DP audio tracks at a higher pitch until I restarted the computer and 828 again. Sounds like tracks were playing back at 48khz instead of 44.1. I guess I may have to replace the 828 or get it repaired...

Doug, I'm wondering how you do a factory reset on a 828-3 FW. I've wanted to try it, but couldn't find anything on it. Some time ago on this list, someone told me there is no factory reset process for the 828-3.

I have had long term problems with my 828-3. Like yours, from time to time it never starts. If I wait for a few hours, it will start. It appears to be heat related because it usually happens if I turn it off, then turn it on again right away, and happens a lot more in the summer than the winter. I could have had it replaced by MOTU for $100, but it continues to start up once a day and will run all day, so I've never bothered. And, according to ebay, it's not worth $100 plus shipping.

828mkIII has a factory reset:

http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/reset

828mk3 / 828mk3 Hybrid / 828x: Press the Param/Setup knob until the LCD screen reads "828mk3 SETUP". The LCD screen will quickly flash to "LCD CONTRAST". Turn the Param/Setup knob all the way to the right. The LCD screen will read: "Factory Defaults Press [Value]". Push the Value knob. The LCD screen will display "Are you sure? Push [VALUE]". Push the Value knob again to confirm. The LCD screen will read: "Initializing...". The clock LED will flash when reset is complete.
