16A expansion question

I am a home enthusiast. I play drums (acoustic and electronic) and also like working with Synths and keyboards. I just bought a 16A to handle all the inputs needed for my keyboards and my roland v-drums, octapad, spd-sx, etc. I currently have my acoustic drums mic'd with 14 mics into a Mackie ProFX22. After seeing the power in the 16a I want to move my acoustic mics under the MOTU setup so I have all in one setup. Do I expand the 16A with a couple of 8PREs? As a home user studio and really playing and recording for fun will this setup do the trick? Will the 44.1 Khz limitations of the optical in\out (when using all 16) really affect me or should Intry to domstrictly AVB interfaces (tons more money..)?
