macbook retina 2014 won't recognize older ultralite

I'm trying to use my older model ultralite with a macbook retina 2014, using an adaptor into the thunderbolt port. My computer will not recognize it. Do I just need to get a newer interface?

Most likely the Thunderbolt port doesn't provide enough bus power. Try connecting with the wall wart power.
