Hooking Up worries

Post by offtheroad »

NewB
I have a mac Pro 12GB RAM Plenty of HD space. Just received my MOTU Ultra Litemk3 and instruction book says shut down Mac before connecting firewire cable. Do I really have to power down or just leave Mac in sleep mode. Also I need a glossary for some of the terms in the book. I'm a Guitar player only. Using Logic Pro X 10.0.7
Thanks

Although the FireWire spec says that devices are hot swappable, too many fried peripherals and burned out motherboards tell us differently.

The spec calls for 22W bus power. It can arc, go where it's not wanted and damage equipment. Shut your computer and peripheral down before plugging or unplugging a FW device.

+1 aways shut down the mac before plugging or unplugging a FW device!

Most of us? Really?

I have no issue with sleep mode and DP and I'm pretty sure that, if "most of us" did, there would be a lot of posts about it.

It might depend on the audio interface drivers. I have no problems with the 828 or 2408, but with some other interfaces, including the built in audio on the MBP, when the system sleeps, MAS loses contact with the audio system and DP switches to MIDI only. I saw the same thing with DP under Windows.

I just now talked to tech support at MOTU and they said for the MOTU Ultralite mk3 it's ok to plug it in when Mac is just in sleep mode and not to shut down completely.
