DP error with Motu 896HD

Can anyone help me with this error? (D.P. 4.6)

(MotuAudioSystem Mas MasCoreAudioWork Thread.cpp 143 [57:0])

I'm trying to record 16 channel mono from 2 896HDs, with a MTP AV and going into a Powerbook G4. the motus are daisy-chained with FW400.

We've been using identical rigs in the past, so not sure why I'm getting an error this time. We recently purchased one of the MOTUs and this is the first time we've used it, but I get the error even when I select just one of the MOTUs in the hardware configuration.

Need more info: What OS? for starters.
Did you download the correct drivers for that OS?
Can you see both in AudioMidi setup?
Have you set up an aggregate device?
Can you see them in DP?

I'm on OSX 10.4.11

Sometimes they both show up in DP, sometimes only one, sometimes none. Checking under FW audio console one shows:

Firmware: 1.0.1, Boot Loader 1.0

the other:
ROM: 1.02 Hardware v0

They don't always show up in this.

I don't think they show up in the MIDI utility.

I just downloaded and installed the MOTU audio package for OSX 10.4 and it hasn't helped.

I can't find anything about updating firmware on the 896HDs.

Well, somewhere between the audio device update and switching out some cables it seems to be working now!
