PCIe 424 + Thunderbolt adapter?

Post by Anton_Pereyra »

Hi, has anyone tested 424 PCIe trough a Magma or Sonnet thunderbolt adapter? I would really like to use a 24 I/O with my i7 iMac, and waiting for the Thunderbolt 424 seems too long. Or should I wait?

Thanks a lot.

If you become the early adopter, everyone will be interested in your results. Except that, unless you work for Sonnet or Magma, you haven't had a chance to try these. No one has.

Without knowing the inner workings of MOTU, I will guess that they are in the same boat as everyone else: Intel promised inexpensive TB chip sets by Spring 2012 - over a year ago. The manufacturers developed and tested (and in some cases announced) a long time ago with sample chips but are still waiting for the general release so that they can begin shipping.

The Sonnet product you are referring to is available only on e Pre-order basis. translation: It's not shipping yet.

From the Magma web site: Reserve yours today - PRE-ORDER for $979! Same situation as Sonnet.

Only the Echo ExpressCard/34 adapters are out.

thanx.

I guess I will have to be patient and stick with my old Digi 002 until new thunderbolt news.

I have tried the PCI 424 with two HD192s connected to a PCI expansion box, further connecting to a sonnet echo expresscard 34 to thunderbolt adapter.
The computer sees the card as audio, but the drivers don´t work.

I´ve been in contact with MOTU speaking about them creating thunderbolt aware drivers and they told me that they we´re waiting on a thunderbolt to PCI box to begin testing. This was around two months ago. I emailed recently again and heard nothing back...

Been stuck on an echo audiofire 12 interface for some months now, unable to use my HD192s. It´s really bugging me to see that RME has released thunderbolt aware drivers for their PCI systems a loooong time ago....
Stop the loudness war.

Everyone is waiting on Intel. By my count, they won't be officially late for 29 more days. Frankly, I am not holding my breath, ya know? Until those chip sets ship and those boxes are built, there is no need for drivers.

To want drivers for a situation where you have to daisy chain to even reach an Echo ExpressCard/34 ... well, lots of luck on that one.

It is possible that, when these TB peripherals do ship, additional drivers may not be necessary. Possible... it depends how transparent the current Apple drivers are. Again, not holding my breath...

I joined this forum just to bump this.

I have a MOTU PCI-based rig I'm not willing to give up and am anxiously awaiting new drivers from MOTU that will recognize the Thunderbolt port (I'll use a Thunderbolt to PCIe adapter) so I can use my current 424 card with my Macbook Pro. I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for this! But if this is months in the making, I'll probably find another solution. Update/Info would be nice, even if it's "Coming Soon"!

OWC just released their Helios Thunderbolt to PCIe box. $399.

http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/T ... atibility/

mLogic's mLink is the same price but no word on when it is avaiable.

http://www.mlogic.com/mlink/preorder

It would be nice to know when the drivers for the 424 are coming.

It depends on the Apple drivers, if transparent, new 424 drivers might not be necessary. No one will know till these boxes are tested.

The boxes have been in the wild for WEEKS. They have been tested. They do not currently work with the 424 cards. New drivers are needed as the current drivers are not Thunderbolt aware.
Several other pro soundcard vendors drivers have been made Thunderbolt aware and have been available for quite some time. I am certain MOTU will do this, but I expected it to be ready by now.

Has anyone tried the new drivers with Thunderbolt to PCIe?

There's no need to comment if you don't have anything to contribute but snide remarks, please.

Is there any news about testing or new drivers? I'd like to use my 424 through thunderbolt. Thanks

You're not the only one, no doubt.

Clearly, none of us know what MOTU is up to in that regard. Have you tried contacting them directly?

Yeah - as a motu 424 user, i hope the guys at apple, motu and thunderbolt chassis builders work together on this one soon!
If you are wanting to run osx with the 424, your only option is a very, VERY outdated Mac Pro!
It's about 4 years old i think!
You could always build a hackintosh but no support for that route.
Apple seem to have abandoned the MacPro so come on guys - please give us Motu/Mac users a working thunderbolt/424 rig!
