828 mk3 weak output signal

Hi there, new to the forum but have owned an 828k3 for a couple of years with no major problems until now. logic 9 user, just installed new OS X (yosemite) and also uninstalled/reinstalled logic 9. everything was fine for the first 2 days of use, everything functioning as usual. i use my 828 mk3 for everything, whether I'm in logic recording or just kicking back listening to music on my HD or on the internet. yesterday, mot audio setup crashed before i went to bed. today i turned my rig on as i always do. any and all audio from my macbook pro (late 2010 model) is barely audible, even with all levels turned up, signal is very weak and noisy. I've tried everything i can imagine, to no avail. everything seems to work, just very weak, noisy output. cannot find anything anywhere about this specific problem. please help!!!
