Panther needs upgrade

Postby lsdd » Thu Jul 29, 2010 2:57 am

Hello my fellow Feline DP friends.
I'm on an old "pre pentium" G5....

Machine Model: Power Mac G5
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 900 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f0
Serial Number: CK412JBDQVH

I'm getting booted off "Myspace","You Tube" and now, even, my "Hotmail"!
I need to upgrade my OS in order to update my "browsers".... Probably time for more RAM...etc
.....

DP 4.6..... ( It works! )

I wish I had another Mac or a PC for internet but, I don't... And many apps require the machine on task to be "online" in many cases

.......

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you.....
(Sad old Panther in need of a "Rain Cheetah" or an "Ice Linux MinX" "Snow Pony" "Stray Puma"...bollocks.... What's up with these stupid cat names? I need a new kitty..... )
Cheers!
Help?

If you are saying that your computer OS is Panther, then by all means upgrade to Tiger at least.

Is "Tiger" still up to task? Heck..... If only I had Dual Quad Core Pentium running "OctoPussy 11.9.9" this wouldn't be a problem.....
Tiger? Really? I'm worried Tiger will only last another year at best the way they are killing off cats at Apple MAc. Intel Windows7.com/in cahoots with THE MAN.co.gov..... ( growling like a "Thunder Cougar"......)

Yes... Go to Tiger, assuming you can find discs somewhere. I wouldn't bother with Leopard on that machine.

10.4.11 is excellent, still working great for me with DP7.2 on a Quad G5. Leo works on G5s, too, and I use it for my graphics, browsing, and mail work. I have Leo on one partition and Tiger on another.

Just looking at 3rd party resellers and it looks like Tiger is more expensive than going to get 10.5 from Apple........ Issues?
Your help is always appreciated.
cheers!

Although Tiger may be a tad more efficient, Leo is being used by many G5 owners to run DP. There are a couple of Native Instrument VIs that I understand don't work under Leo, but I am aware of no other limitations.
