Overture 5 — $75 through December 31, 2017

Post by mikehalloran »

For those looking for an alternate notation app, Overture 5 is on sale for $75. That's $54 less than the cross-grade price I paid last year.
https://sonicscores.com/

Overture 5 has a bit of that work in progress feel to it and that's not an illusion. He has been releasing tweaks and updates every few weeks. The movie window is getting better as is xml support. There is no audio library yet — that will be a paid add-on later — but it works with many of the usual suspects.

Don Williams wrote Encore in the 1980s and the original version of Overture for Opcode so many years ago. He is on the other end of the support board so you know you are interacting with the developer.

Finale, Sibelius and Dorico it's not but, if you don't need the heavy lifting, you may wish to check it out.

I've been moving over to it to replace Encore for the down and dirty charts I still knock out on occasion.

I somehow missed this post at the time, but saw a 20% off coupon this week and grabbed the cross-grade for $103. Unfortunately, it won't accept the serial key, and there's no response from my problem report so I'm wondering if it's still an active company or are they just maintaining a sales page?

Something is going on but no one knows what. Don hasn’t been seen in over a month and we’v not seen a bug fix in over two... We’ve been told he’s taking a break but have heard no other news.

If anyone is minding the store, I don’t know who it is.

Meanwhile, not sure what the serial number issue is. Sometimes, certain builds need to see it again but I’m not having problems.

I don't remember if the serial number activates the demo or if you have to download the release version. There was an issue awhile back with the installer but that was fixed awhile ago.

The Overture 5 number may be like DP in that it must have dashes instead of minus signs.

The current release version is 5.5.2-5. The download is available from your user account or this page along with previous beta versions. Overture is like DP where the latest overwrites the installed version unless you've renamed it (like DP, adding the version number works).

Well, one of the sequences looked like it needed an extra dash to make them all the same number of characters, but it rejects it whichever way I do it.

Furthermore, both the account page and the emails, clip the name of the product to "rture" and only show part of the serial key. I was lucky that I had put the entire key on the clipboard before it forever went away at my account page and everywhere else, replaced by the clipped copy (which I also tried, just in case there were two separate keys, such as for Windows vs. macOS, or for two computers).

Oh, I'll try replacing the hyphens with manually typed hyphens in case a character set mis-mapping caused them to become minuses.

Also, I'll check which installer I got, as I didn't install the demo first; I simply purchased it. But I might have tried a demo a ways back and deleted it, so I should look for prefs files to delete.

That will be later tonight though as I'm in the middle of cooking a five-course meal. :-)

I'll try Safari after dinner. Could be an Opera browser issue with the vendor.

Aha; mine is twelve groups, with the middle group having no dash and being twice as long. So I think there is a formatting issue at the website and in their emails, as the same problem occurs on Safari where the product name is "rture" and the license key is cut off.

I tried the second half only, and it works. This is the part that shows up at my account now after "rture". My email showed the first half though. And nothing else.

Thanks for telling me how long the serial key should be; I had a feeling this was two keys vs. one, but had probably only tried the first half vs. the second half, until just now.

Nice look and overall workflow, so far. Interesting that it knows how to interpret templates for Vienna Instruments that were made for other notation programs.

Like Encore (Don wrote the first version), I find note entry faster in Overture than Finale.

I almost always enter notes in Finale with the numeric keypad and a MIDI kbd. Super fast.

I used to have a dedicated MIDI keyboard set up on my computer table, but that became an ergonomic no-go a few years ago, even with the super-slim original version of Arturia's controllers. So I have to turn with my back to the computer and use my Minimoog Voyager instead.

As I almost always write on paper first, a MIDI keyboard isn't always the most effective way for me to transcribe to the screen, and I no longer have a numeric keypad on the latest Apple keyboard.

I may buy one of the numeric keypad extenders though. I would prefer to put it on the left side anyway, and normally it's on the right side on keyboards where it's built-in.

I've been too busy comping clarinet takes to do any cross-app tests with Overture yet, but I'm glad I bought it as I am finding that its workflow is different enough for the others that there are going to be times when I find it the least impediment to quickly preserving an idea.

I don't intend to make it my main tool regardless, because the future is likely with Dorico (even if I still balk at it being THE most expensive notation product on the market, and going up vs. down in price).
