Masterwriter 2.0 on 10.12.6 or alternatives

Post by philbrown »

Just wondering if anyone has gotten Masterwriter v2 to run on 10.12. I get errors when I try to run it in 10.12.6. I'm considering going ahead and renting the new version if there's no other alternative- since my wife and I are way into songwriting these days it would probably be worth it for us (if we can run it on multiple devices). I just shot an email to the MW developer to ask about that. Also open to other software suggestions but after google searching it looks pretty bleak.

I got it to install. I'll try to remember how and post later.

For many users, there was an unzip bug in OS 12.1–12.4. Files looked ok but they didn't work and gave strange errors.

Eventide Support turned me onto a bit of freeware, keka.app. Unzipping files in that did the trick.

Eventide, PSP license files, FinalDraft, Masterwriter and many other file types were affected. Apple acknowledged the bug and fixed the problem in 10.12.5.

Since then, however, I have found a couple of old installers that still don't work properly in Sierra unless unzipped in keka.app. Don't know what the problem is with those and, having found a solution, I don't care.

It didn't occur to me that I was dealing with the unzip bug untill after I paid for MW 3 — I no longer remember if it's one or two years, frankly. In any case, for all of its advertised improvements, I find MW 3 not much different than MW 2 except that it is entirely web based and accessible via any device. Had I gotten MW 2 working first, I would never have bought 3.

This was a few months ago and I don't remember if I had to disable SIP to install but I suspect I didn't.

Will MW 2 still work in OS 10.13 next month? I won't know till then.

You asked if there's anything like MasterWriter. No, although you can use a number of fifferent apps to get much of the functionality. It all depends on which features you use.

Thanks, Mike. I just heard from the guy at MW - very helpful and offered me a good deal on renting the new version. The guy should go ahead and do an upgrade deal on his site IMHO. My wife (and songwriting partner) and I can install on as many devices as we want which will be really handy. V3 certainly is visually more appealing. We do so much songwriting that it's worth it for us to go ahead and rent V3 at this reduced price.

I was thinking along those lines and even bought 3 (hope to do a little writing on my iPad from my London hotel) but it bugged me that my 2nd copy worked of MW2 on my wife's iMac while it didn't on mine. Then I remembered the unzip bug and wondered... Voila!
