El Cap ver 10.11.6 not compatible w/Finale 2014 or earlier

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

From Make Music
Mac OS X 10.11.6 Update
Apple has just released OS X 10.11.6. While current versions of Finale and PrintMusic are fully compatible with this new version of the Mac El Capitan operating system, previous versions are not.

If you're using Finale 2014 or PrintMusic 2014, you will want to update to 2014.5 before installing Mac OS X 10.11.6. For more details and instructions on how to download, click below.

I just downloaded the 2014.5 installer, which weirdly doesn't use Finale in its name. "MacDiskInstaller... etc." As I understand it, this is a free update.

Is it ok to rename a .dmg?

I got that e-mail, too. I don't understand why MakeMusic is sending that out now. Finale 2014 was incompatible with El Capitan from the get-go. It's part of what the 2014.5 release was about. Maybe it's now MORE incompatible. Dunno. Yeah, it's a free update. Get it, if you don't have it.
Finale is still buggy. It's always been buggy and probably always will be buggy. But, I can't seem to live without it.

I think the email may have been meant to serve as a courtesy reminder, so that those doing the El Capitan update don't get surprised and can take appropriate action.

After three tries, I can't get Finale 2014.5 to launch on my just-updated El Capitan 10.11.6 system.

I keep getting SEV faults (bad address), but I've never been an Apple developer so always have a hard time knowing where to look in crash dumps for the "original error". It's a super-long dump and appears to be faulting the SoundToys audio units plug-ins.

I ran Font Book but found no enabled duplicates, and of course installed Java 6 and did disc repairs (Repair Permissions appears to no longer be a direct command in El Capitan).

Update: fourth time's the charm, or maybe just being more patient on first launch and not assuming the long time and lack of feedback means it's going to crash. I think my earlier crash reports were just because I did a Force Quit thinking the app was stuck in infinite spin mode.

You have to have an inout device attached (or if you have a built-in input jack, something connected to it, even a dummy jack) or F2014.5 will not launch. It's a known bug. May not be your problem, but it's good to know about.

You might have missed my update comment at the bottom, that it worked the fourth time, and thereafter. Yet I'm not certain why. Maybe MLC's comment was pertinent to a change in my connected devices on my fourth try.

Anyway, I'm glad it's working now as I am ready to start producing lead sheets for my finally-completed jazz album so I can start replacing some MIDI tracks (though they DO sound very realistic in most cases, partly due to having been played via wind controllers) with live instruments and then get around to mixing and mastering.

Oh, I'd probably better do a trial run of printing from Finale pretty soon, as that's the sort of feature that can unexpectedly break after an OS update, due to using different fonts (in many cases) than the GUI uses (or perhaps issues with vector graphic export depending on stuff in the ecosystem that changed).

Good luck on the project. FWIW I always print from Finale to a PDF. The do the actual paper print from Acrobat.

I print to .pdf then print from Preview even though I also have Acrobat.

When you print to .pdf first, you know what it's going to look like. The same can't always be said about printing directly from Finale.

Oh, good to know. I always print to PDF anyway when it comes to scores, because I export them to my hard drive for backup. Yeah, I'm paranoid about this sort of thing. :-) I figure I can always hire out a score-reader service if proprietary data from application projects is lost.
